buying a new car, toyota corolla twin cam, ur opinion pleae Wed, 12 January 2005 10:25 Go to next message
G'day guys,

I'm looking at buying a 1987 Toyota Corolla twin cam hatch.
I just went and looked at it and these are the things i could pick up on...

3rd gear grinds when putting it into that gear at high rpm (4000-4500) but when at low rpm its fine, every other gear is fine, the clutch has recently been changed and 3rd gear has only started grinding since being changed, any ideas what it could be and whats involved in fixing it and roughly how much?

its got a tiny little bit of rust bubbling around the right rear wheel arch, thats an easy fix though

it doesn't have power steering, but the guy is going to supply a pump with the car, how much would it roughly cost to get that set up?

when driving, the car is pulling to the left, i assume this is just a wheel alignment?? its got 15" mags

steering wheel is not centered, but thats ok just need to take it off and line it up again and hook the horn up to it....

other than that, the car seemed to be in good condition, the engine was very clean... no leaks that i could see

do you think its adviseable to get an onsite NRMA check?

he's offered the car to me for $2500 down from $3200 advertised price..

what do you guys think?

cheers
dave.

Alot of cars i've driven pull slightly to the left, my reasoning is that its a saftey thing, i.e if you fall alseep/stop steering the car will drift off the road, not into oncoming traffic.

lol yeh, no car should be pulling to any side. Cars are sort of designed to drive in a straight line...

What do you mean by it doesn't have power steer? Twin Cams came with power steer. If its just the swapping of a pump then its a home job but if its the whole she-bang $$$$$$.
Grinding in 3rd could be a clutch problem. The car shouldn't pull to the left. Check the tires for scrubbing. As for the steering wheel it's possibly caused by the wheel alignment.
For the rust patch, its a double layer skin, but depending on how bad it is it shouldn't be too hard to fix.
A gernie does wonders in removing oil leaks. Trust me Evil or Very Mad
And yes get it checked over be the NRMA and get a REVS as well.
Does the air con work?
Take it to a vacant car park or something and do some tight figure 8's in both fowards and reverse and listen for any clicking from the driveshafts.
How mean kays has she done?
Service history??
Ask a mate to have a look at the car for a second opinion.

its done 259,000kms
the guy said its never had air con or power steering...
not sure if its a 100kw, how do i tell?

Bullshit
synchos are in the gearbox, they help in making the gear changes easier so that the driver doesn't have to double clutch like an old crash box.

Have a look on the intake manifold there sholud be emblem with the letters "TVIS" thats for the bluetop and early redtop. Its point less using it on the 100kW motor. You can also tell by the colouring of the lettering. But in some cases the cam covers might have been swapped.
Check engine numbers, hey. The body plate should tell you if its a twinky or not. But really the twinky is the sports model of the CS-X. Which is cloth trim, tacho, a/c and p/s the twinky also has rear disces and a strut brace which is bolted to the engine bay.

Edit: Me and my snitty spelling

3rd gear might be a sign of warn bearings or synchros.
I experianced the same. But not in my car though. The noise went away after a few days of hard revving and a top up of oil.

Power steering pump is useless unless u got a twinky with a power steering fitted factory. check if it even has the oil lines to the rack. Rust? All cars rust. Not a problem.

IMHO...
BUY MY CAR!!! Shocked Laughing
