Hey mate
If your talking about a boot install....it sounds fine
I compared the difference between in cabin and boot.....sound quality is just the same.....i only lost a TINY bit of volume....but the practicality and security of not having it on the back seat far outweighs that tiny bit of vol. loss.
for me rear loading sounded best. But do both... see whatever works for u.....also depends upon sub
also....installing it to the left side of the boot sounded good.....well in the driver seat anyway....but i have an odd shape box so once again experiment and see what u like.
Im sure u know this..... but when your experimenting with diff positions for the sub in the boot....remember to shut the boot lid

cheers dude, i should of had a look at your when we met at thornleigh maccas, but i didnt so thats ok, i wanna port the rear shelf so that it projects more sound but also protects the speaker in the rear shelf from getting fucked due to subwoofer air movement and buring the coils and shortening their life.

As a member of Team CarAudioAustralia and a owner of a TA22, I'm presuming that I could shed some light here.
You can see in my signature my specs of my system and that's still with the tank in my boot. It's a very very very tight fit. What I have is a custom boot buildout however, nothing too flash though. Basically it's a boxed off sorta thing with my amps against the tank bit and one sub on each side on the floor.
One thing you'll notice about the LT is the size of the boot, not very big here. So, when you get your sub/subs, get ones that are suited to a very small enclosure. I own two JL Audio subs and theyre sitting in their own 1 cubic foot box as shallow as they can be. What I did was make they own box, and basically put them over the spare tyre, it raises the floor a bit but it works. Then you can put a flase floor over the top of these to make it nice and neat. It sounds dodgy but it looks good.
Another option is to fibreglass the boot well, that'll work nice, however, i needed the spare tyre. If that wasn't the case I wouldn't have any hesitation in doing this. You'll end up with a bit more bootspace too.
With the rest of the system, I'm not one for rear fill (rear speakers). As the Celica is a small car I did away with the rear speaker idea and put ports in the rear shelf where speakers would normally go. These aren't in relation to the box, you can make them as big or small as you want, I just did it to make the shelf look cool and to let a bit more bass into the cabin.
I am yet to have it SPL tested as the car is off the road for a while so I can't tell you any official numbers. However, the sound is still great, provided you get good gear and tune it well, you should have no problems.
I hope this cleared some of this up. Good luck with everything.

I've got a stereo in my RA23. I've got a 12" in the boot and it does the job just fine. The box and the sub aren't the most attractive looking and didn't cost much but it still sounds good. I found that there is more bass if you point the sub to the sides of the boot and not the back.
Only problem we came accross was that the window mechanisms in the doors are so big that you have to have spacers for any speakers in the door. Also because of where the window winder is situated it also takes away valuable space to put the speakers in.

Remember any TA22 in 'typical' condition will have every panel nicely dancing in time if you put any kind of serious stereo in it I love chasing rattles...

I've got 3 jaycar amps in my car, 2 of the 2x100w ones and 1 2x150w one. Value for money sure can't complain, by all means come take a look at them.

in my old VN i used to fire the sub at the side - got heaps more bass than pointing forward or backwards.
i'll be driving two JBL GT102's diagonally towards the centre of the TA22 (at least thats the plan)
i got a jaycar home subwoofer for my computer yesterday is AWESOME and only 30w!

Actually, many people believe that this is a good idea, HOWEVER, this is not true. 6x9s are made for large large enclosures, (i wont go through details) such as the boot of a car, so suddenly sticking a pair into a couple of boxes is not going to increase the bass output of the speaker, in fact, putting them in a box may actually DECREASE the deep bass frequencies. Bottom line: If your gonna use 6 x 9s, stick em on the shelf.

Don't worry about this, the boot area is a very big space in a speakers' point of view. Putting the speakers on the shelf while there is a sub in the boot won't really shorten their life. On the contrary, putting the speakers in the SAME BOX as the sub will ruin their functionality somewhat. Still, notice the size difference and the different area in which they reside?
So yeah, for anyone else who isn't going to port their shelf, don't worry about the speakers on it, you won't kill em.

Bass output of 6x9's is not an issue when your going to be running a sub
And thats what we're talking about.....boxing the 6x9's so they dont get damaged by the sub...

I get my didicam next week so i'll post some pics of my RA23 boot install (even though it's not finished yet). I have a fiberglass box moulded to the right hand side of the boot with a Clarion 12". Not much space in these cars but you don't buy them for the boot space anyhow

it's nothing too flash, mainly just so I could fit the box where I wanted it (such an odd shape). It's going to be covered in 1/2" foam and black velour (mmmmmm, furrryyyy) so I haven't bothered sanding/bogging the finish to make it real smooth like the painted ones. I'm also in the progress of making some new pods and a fibergalss dash to replace the very old and brittle plastic, but these need some more design before I get into building them. May even offer the mould for the dash up for sale, or sell some custom dashes, we'll see. Anyhow, photos hopefully next week.
