How to turn my car into a 1/2 cut?
|

Hi all, I have a ra28 shell in my garage that I plan to use for projects like my 3sgte engine conversion and next brake upgrade etc. I want to turn into a 1/2 cut so it takes up less room and is easier to work on.
How do you think its best to cut it in half?
I have an angle grider, but not sure how this will go getting through chassie rails etc.
Cheers

Angle grinder works OK - just have a few metal cutting disks and take it slowly, don't ush the blade too hard. I cut up the remains of an ma70 half-cut into small pieces with a 4.5 inch angle grinder. Surprisingly easy, and didn't take long at all.
Chassis rails are usually not that thick, strength comes from their box shape construction.

I might have a go with the angle grider and if not go out and see if I can hire an oxy cutter?

Its a little rough, but an axe will get through what you can't cut with an angle grinder.

Most of the half cuts I have seen have been chopped with an oxy / gas axe.
They generally cut through the middle of the front pillars and through the floorpan at the middle of the front doorsills.

Yeah I could imagine an oxy would be quite easy. I am going to push out the front windscreen this weekend and cut through the front pillars with the angle grinder which should be real easy.
Then have a go at the floor and see what happens

I am amazed no one has mentioned to pull out the fuel lines first...
If you hit one of those and there are vapours in it, it could be pretty bad... Make sure the fuel tank is completely empty as well...
And unplug all the wires so that you don't cut through wiring looms

Ahh yeah good point. The fuel tank is already out of it, and no engine in there.. But suppose fuel or vapours could still be sitting in the lines.
I'll undo and remove these first!

Why not just pull out the other parts you need (Brakes, crossmembers) properly, and sell the shell off?
WOuldn't it be easier? Some one might have a need for the car shell and other bits and pieces

Thats right, its so I can build up my new engine and brake setup and not take my RA28 off the road. Once its all done in the dummy car I can move it all over quickly

Ahh I see now... I thought you were using the shell as a donor car... It's all clear now... LOL

Handy and less noise than angle grinder. With proper blade you can cut chassis rails.

The half cut I bought was chopped through the pillars with a big arse angle grinder. They also went straight through the damn windscreen and left the bottom half of it in the car. I was picking bits of glass out of my knees for days after pulling the dash/remaining interior out.

Done took around 1 hour or so with a 4 inch grinder.
I'm actually now thinking to turn the rear half into a trailer.. How cool would that be, a RA28 trailer

I've cut up alot of cars (among other things) with that type saw pictured above. We call em a 'sawzall'. A good $2 14tpi blade will run thru a car like a hot knife thru butter
