Struts.....

Just had a pedders saftey check. I need all struts to be replaced, as they are all apprently leaking.
I need sugestions with what i should go for. I could go for Pedders sports rider but i don't have $1300. If i can get any good suggestions about this it would be good. If i decide not to get the pedders i can get my mates dad to put 'em in for a carton. Any input would be good cos' i am mecanically retarded.
Thanks.

Struts are leaking? or shocks are?
If you just need new shocks, and you don't wanna spend too much, I think monroe's are about $50-$70 a corner.

i used to have pedders shocks in my RA28.
they are useless.
my mate has monroe shocks he bought from super cheap and they are better.
my advice is to stay away from pedders.
KYB make good shocks which i have found to be a resonable price..
id also consider taking the car to an independent suspension place and getting a second quote
but thats just me.
cheers

I got my shocks from auto one regularly have 45% off them, if you have one in your local area get a price, the shocks were 65 bucks a corner for kyb's for my rona elsewhere I had been quoted 350 just for the front strut inserts. My order was stuffed cos kyb doesn't actually make shocks for the rona but the rears which were actually for a crown were identical the fronts however were totally different so they gave me monroe gt gas at same price these are worth about 200 bucks each for the rona.
Your struts would be leaking cos they are oil filled sticking gas shocks in would rectify this prob as they are sealed.
Pedders are rip off merchants, don't go there buy parts yourself and then if you can install them yourself saving labour costs or just get your mechanic to do it.
All up it cost me 580 for parts including 4 shocks and 4 springs, pedders had quoted me 800 for parts alone with labour on top of this.

RE: Leaking struts - for some reason a lot of mechanics call them struts. Technically it is the strut that is leaking, not the shock.. In most cars they have the shock a part of the strut, so it is the strut leaking oil.
I just replaced the shocks, springs and struts in the Corolla. But only the front. The rear shocks were replaced last RWC and the rear are leaf, so they sag enough. Cost me a little under $250 for GT Gas shocks and King springs, from Repco with a discount.
I've had Monroe's and King's in a KE30 Corolla before and they are great for the price. I had a full Whiteline kit in the VH and that was awesome as well. Used Koni shocks though, nice ride. If you're happy to install it yourself, the Whiteline kits are pretty good value for money. Might seem expensive, but they are good quality.

Many people are confused between shocks and struts, gas and oil. It's painfull. Its like the blonde secretary talking about her computer, "its not electric, its electronic."
All cars (within reason), have 4 springs (bouncy bouncy), which hold the weight of the vehicle. All cars have 4 shock absorbers, something to control the bounce. Sometimes we have "struts" which is a housing that has both the shock absorber and the spring mounted in one. If you can't take the strut apart, you have to buy a new whole strut which has the new shock absorber housed in it, but its not that expencive (and you use the old springs and mounting bits). Sometimes the struts can come apart, and often with older cars the original shock assembly can come apart also. These are called oil bath shocks. These can be reconditioned according to the manual, but often these are replaced with sealed shock/strut cartridges. All shocks have oil in them. If rebuildable shocks (and oil bath type) are leaking, then you can just use a new seal. But if "sealed" shocks or cartridge inserts are leaking, they need replacement. Some shocks also have gas in them, but not all.
Just buy the shocks/struts from Repco or someplace and save most of your money. Get your friend to fit them.

1300 is a rip off!
i could go out tomorrow and buy king springs koni yellows and urethane bushes for my car, and probably still have money left over.
i presume the corolla wont be alot of difference in price.

My suggestion would be if the dude said "Your struts/shocks/dampeners/whatever are rooted/stuffed/shagged/dead and this is how much to fix and replace." i'd ask for a second opinion from elsewhere.
Personnel experince. Safety check on my old T-18 came with a $1500 price tag on the front suspension. Dad told me to get a 2nd opinion which i did and it cost a grand total of $25 for a wheel alignment, go figure.
Get a second opinion, dude.

If the struts are leaking, they'll clearly have oil all over them.. Also, check the dust boot and bump stop, they usually go as well, and once they're gone, dust/debris gets in the seal easier and causes it to perish.

Get a second opinion.
Most of these places that advertise $15 100000 point safety checks are especially picky on everything in the hope to get some real business out of the customers. Think about it, Could you run a business when you are only bringing in $15 for every hours work.
Oh and that would also explain why the shocks are so expensive.
Go find you local 'trusted' mechanic and get a realistic opinion. He may still say they are stuffed. but there is a big difference between a little bit worn and unroadworthy.
