AE-86: how I fitted disks to a T-18 diff and a Hyundai radiator. Sat, 15 January 2005 15:10 Go to next message
as the title says I fitted disk brakes to a T-18 diff that's headed for my Sprinter, also earlier I fitted a Hyundai radiator and I have lots of pic on how I did it, see the link in my sig to check it out. If your impatient then the info on the disk conversion is on page 4.

oh thanks, I am hoping it will work as well too!

Shiri: I will think about it, I might be able to do some of it for you. Contact me if you want: sam@telpacific.com.au

I think in due time I will have a few proper articles like these:

- the T-18 diff
- Hyundai radiator
- 20 valve cooling system layout
- coil-over assembly

for those who couldn't be bothered looking at the link:

and also I have to say it's not in the pic but the caliper mounts do look a bit suss. I will need to brace them, but I will first check that it all fits before I do that.

before I say anything I need to check this will work... I have been told the calipers won't in the position that their in, however I thought this might happen so I only put tack welds on, still it wont be easy to move. This might get real tricky. Damn I wish my second car was still on the road. I have no problem at all showing where to make the two cuts to make the mounts slide, on, its real easy. however it does leave a relativly small contact area which needs to be braced. I will take a pic of the mounts when I can and you guys probably won't be as impressed after that. Also I want a take apicture of my axle puller, it is the most crude thing you would of ever seen, lets just say me and my dad used a 3 meter long pole as the main part!

so nice work there Sam,

why do you say the rear wont fit?? I have my calipers in the same spot and they fit just fine, there was some small manipulation of some pointless panel flange near the top of the stroke but nothing a lump hammer didnt realign.

What car is your T series diff out of?

-Corona ST-141 disks, massive disks on a Corona , strange but true!

-Ae82 corolla twinky calipers

IRA11Y: really? that gives me hope, I had a quick look under my car and the only thing I can see a being an issue is the anti-roll bar, however I didnt get a good chance to look at it because my car is well.. bloody low! Its a TE72 T-18 diff

IRALLY: when i had mine test mounted there i was having issues with fouling against the panel for the upper trailing arm there. The pintara calipers are a lot shallower than the AE92/82 calipers which we are using. Would be good to get them on the front though in the airflow.

oh yeah I just remembered, the body bracing, well seeing I am going for a 20 Valve N/A engine instead of a 4AGZE with a big turbo I wont have any body twisting torque available. I will still attempt to make my own Cro-Mo bracing for a 3 way strut brace and a rear seat belt mount brace, one where the seat stays in that is. Other than that I dont see a need for it.

Sam

Great side and heaps of info. I am compiling parts for my AE86 including the usual 4AGE engine swap. I was wondering why the T18 rear end rather than utilising the Sprinter diff and housing? I was going to do use the original but there may be a reason not to now. Could you outline the advantages of the T18 diff over the AE86 unit.

Todd,

the std oz spec sprinter axle is an S series,6.4" in diamter, and lsds are NOT available for them.

the T18 axle is a T series, with the same centre as a JDM sprinter unit, and you can get LSD centres for these. the gears are also slightly bigger,at 6.7".

btw guys,JDM AE86 T series and OZ T18 T series diffs run different sized axle bearings. the JDM sprinter diff's bearings are more than twice as wide. found this out the hard way...
