Anyone raced with a new Torsen diff? Sun, 16 January 2005 01:57 Go to next message
Has anyone raced an ma61 os similar with an aftermarket Torsen diff centre? Just wondering if it was any better/worse than the clutch type that the ma61 came out with. Also has anybody actually bought or are they running any of the new upgraded ct12a turbos that have sprung up lately? Cost? Better or worse? Feedback on the above would be great.
Cheers
Rich

I have a Torsen LSD in my Soarer. Love it to bits. Can't compare it to a clutch type LSD cos I don't think I've ever driven one, but it sure beats the hell out of a single spinner.

As for the new CT12A replacements (I take it you are referring to Neil Griffith's hybrid turbos from ALSC), they are a fantastic replacement/upgrade turbo. Steel wheels, tested to 25psi (I only ran them at 17psi, and man were they good). Cost is around $2700 from memory. Might sound expensive, but it's cheaper than almost every other option you have when replacing 1J turbos.

I have a torsen in my MA61, and it's heaps better than the old clutch diff - noticeably more grip and also a lot more consistent and predictable in its behaviour. On one or two occasions it's gone into single-spinner mode (on very low-grip surfaces), but apart from that I have no complaints. I consider it one of the best investments I've made on my Supra so far... apart from the 2JZ that is. Very Happy

What about drag racing?? Are they just as good on the strip as clutch type? I have no doubt that the Torsen is heaps better in every other respect but as I said do they hook up and drive both wheels with a high rev start on the strip?

Launches in my car tend to come with plenty of axle tramp, which I'm yet to sort out, so I can't give a true opinion, but after the rear end settles down, power certainly is dished out evenly through both wheels.

Clutch-type diffs are the weapon of choice for the drags. Torsens are known to shatter with sudden extreme torque loadings, ie hard launches at the dragstrip. I've heard of a few JZA70 diffs letting go this way.
