CV joint removal

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone knows how to get a CV joint off (and back on again). I've heard the only way is with a big hammer, but I'm not quite sure what I'm removing.
I'm trying to make a hybrid of a couple of driveshafts using one outer CV with another assembly
Here's a pic of what I'm looking at, where should I be hitting?
Cheers,
Dave

Generally, the outer CVs are not made to be disassembled. The standard procedure to replace an outer boot, for example, is to pull the inner CV apart, then slide the outer boot on from the other end.
Having said that, most will come off intact, given enough violence. You need to slip the boot back along the shaft so that you can get a decent sized drift (prefarably brass) onto the inner cage, right next to the shaft. Then pound it with a hammer, parallel to the shaft. It should pop off, much like the inner joint pops off over the snap ring on the transaxle output shaft.
I know it's not standard procedure, but I remember doing Mazda outer boots this way, having been assured by a mechanic I trust (a rare animal indeed) that he always did it that way to save the time and hassle of dismantling the inner CV (or even popping the joint off the gearbox).
The usual disclaimers apply - I'm guessing you don't care too much if you damage the CV, but don't come crying to me if you bash the crap out of one (or more)of your fingers

Cool, thanks for that.
There's a ball thing on the end of the shaft right? so hit just next to there somewhere?
Does the joint need to be 'straight' when I do this?
Any trick to putting it back on, or just push?
Cheers,
Dave

Well I belted the bejesus out of it, firstly with a brass drift and ball hammer, then brass drift and block hammer, then blunt chisel and block hammer, then blunt chisel and sledge hammer (small swing), then large rod held by long pliers and medium swing sledge hammer, then just medium swing sledge hammer. We refrained from full swing sledge as we value our workshop and the medium swings was already causing dammage to the CV.
So I rang around a few places and landed on the incredible Southern Drive Shafts in Miranda. Who for $60 a side (trade), changed and repacked my outer CVs. For $10 a pop, installed new boots. And for nothing, assembled one of my inner CVs which had missing parts.
Couldn't be happier for $160, comming out with 4 new boots and knowing my CVs were professionally pressed off and on (and not just had the crap belted out of them).
Another drive shaft place told be they could not be dissassembled in any way shape or form and would only replace them with new outer CVs for $200 per side.
All mechanics said they would give it a belt but could not garauntee getting them off, or shattering them in the process.

I can't say that I am surprised that you couldn't shift it. By the same token, I would have been equally unsurprised if you had succeeded!!
Just goes to show though, if you don't like what a 'mechanic' tells you, it's often a good idea to ask another. All too often "it can't be done" equates to either "I can't be bothered" or "I haven't got a clue, but I'm not going to admit that to you"
Southern Drive Shafts, Miranda has been duly noted in my book of 'good blokes'.

You don't have to use spring compressors to remove the suspension.
To pull the shafts out you will have to remove the hubs from the struts though.
