Hi all,
Currently I gotta 1g-gte 86 soarer with Auto gearbox.... I would like to convert the transmission to manual. Also I would like to get a gearbox that would work well for 1jz-gte swap which hopefully would happen mid next year.. What gearbox should I use? Has anybody done this conversion before?
Thanx

If you're planning to upgrade to a 1JZ, you should defintely use the R154. Unfortunately there is no bellhousing which mates a 1G to an R154; you have to use a W58. I think it would be much easier if you do the manual conversion at the same time as the engine conversion, and put up with the auto in the meantime.

you could just take the b/h from the r154 and the auto b/h from the 1g, and get one made from 2 if u really want
but as ed said, it'll be easier to do engine/tranny swap in one stage

Whats the different between w58 and r154? The 1j swap would mostly be stock engine with pod air filter and exhaust so would the w58 gearbox be able to handle it.. Also whats a reasonable price for a w58 gearbox?
I would rather do the swap in two stages as to
1. Getting sick of the Auto trans
2. I think it would be out of the road for less time
3. Money. Easier to budget
Thanks Norbie and Cressida Supra for the info.

Also does the existing bellhousing fit the w58?

You can get a bellhousing for the W58 to mate up to the 1GGTE. The normal W58 should take the 1JZGTE if you aren't mean with it, but a slightly safer bet would be the later model W58 from a JZA80 Supra.

Heavy Soarer + torquey 1JZ = broken W58. You've got rocks in your head if you don't get the R154, especially since you can buy a 1JZ front cut with an R154 already attached.
Your car will be off the road for a much shorter period if you do the engine and transmission swap at the same time. You'll probably end up removing the transmission to do the engine swap anyway (it's easier that way), so why not do the transmission conversion while you've got it out?
