My T50 sucks! Mon, 17 January 2005 07:42 Go to next message
My T50 out of my 86 wont hold in second (read: pops out of under load). I have pulled down the gearbox but all the the synchro's look fine and the bearing play is minimal. I have been told many things from "need a new input shaft" to complete "new bearings" and "gear sets". So what the hell should I do (cos I dont have $500 to spend on a bearing set and $270 on synchro rings and still find out its still not it)

My T50 out of my 86 wont hold in second (read: pops out of under load).

lay shaft bearings are stuffed - under load the gears won't mesh properly so it pushes itself out of gear (which is better than snapping and chewing the teeth of the gears).

if it's been like this for a while, it's likely that the teeth on the layshaft and possibly the main shaft are also flogged slightly. Synchro's should be alright unless they grind.

does is also pop out 1st during heavy take off, or when slowly crawling down a steep slope in 1st (e.g. no accel, engine braking) - this is also a sign of layshaft no longer aligning correctly with main shaft when under load.

cheaper to buy another box ... if you feel bored and in need of wasting more money, rebuild the 1st box.
