Choppin Springs on an RA60 Tue, 18 January 2005 01:16 Go to next message
Hey modders,

I want to Lower my 1982 XT celica, but have never chopped springs before. What I need to know is, is it possible? how much will it affect handling, etc. If anyone knows of any guides or anything on the net that would be a great help also.

Thanks!

Andy

Yes, it is entirely possible to illegally modify your car and fuck up its handling.

Don't chop your goddamned springs...

Buy some lowered springs, Kings sell a set for front and rear.

If you are too cheap, don't bother, leave it at stock height.

what they said
chopped springs are illegal (which doesn't really worry me) and unsafe (which does worry me)

rofl!!! that kitten is my wallpaper now. Oh yeah, what they said about chopping. If anything, you can get a special clamp that will compress the springs instead of chopping them, still cheap as peanuts.

Maybe theres the making of a FAQ as its been asked many times before.

Should I chop my springs?????

Answer:

Yes, if you think that the value of your spine, neck and ability to walk is worth more then a couple of hundred bucks.

No, if you have any respect for yourself other road users and your car.

This is one law that actually makes sense.

dun lizen to dem man. dey dun no wotz goin on. Fark one even getz a cat to werk on hiz ryde.

kut half da coilz out and drop dat bitch on da bump stops! it wil be hektik! stif az a go kart 2!!

2 angle grinda bladez shood do da trik.

On a more serious note, ever seen what happens when a non-captive spring falls free from its perch.

Springs are cheap, do it right.

Gee thanks for all the "helpful" suggestions! I never intended on chopping them less I had some advice, and now that I realise its unsafe ( the Illegal part dont bother me one bit) I wont touch them.

And stop with all the cheap calls! Im a 18 yr old Uni student, I can hardly afford to put fuel in it, let alone buying new springs...

Everyone was a bit harsh (self included). I was in the same boat as you (poor uni student wanting to mod car) at one stage so I know what you mean.

Here is a helpful tip, post an ad in the appropriate section of this forum asking for a second hand set of lowered springs to suit an RA60 (wanted to buy). Someone might have some dirt cheap.

Most of the time I couldn't afford to put fuel in the damn car whilst at uni. Makes you appreciate luxuries like petrol more later.....

Yeah, and it will still be illegal and unsafe
