timing light not working from lack of spark. Tue, 18 January 2005 07:54 Go to next message
i was trying to fix the timing on my ta22 today and the timing light would only come on wen i reved it past idle. is it possible that there isnt enough spark to set it off??

if it is possible, wat can cause it.

i am running a elec dizzy with a standard coil, is this the problem??

and before u comment on this it runs better then it did with the ignitor and elec coil.(it wouldnt spark at all)(i think that its stuffed)i am going to buy a elec coil if i know that it will work. can anyone near me let me borrow one to see if it will fix the problem??

thanx

there should be more than enough current in the pulse to light a small globe,l so there must be a weak connection or something broken. are you sure its sparking? just hold the lead near a ground and crank the engine for a split second (without starting)

If your timing light operates with two leads to the battery and one to the No.1 spark plug lead, with the battery leads connected, hold the light next to your head and press the trigger. You should hear a soft electronic whistling sound each time you press the trigger. If you can't hear that then you have a poor 12v connection or your light is possibly faulty.
Also, try the light out on another car and see if it works.

Sometimes even just jiggling the timing light lead clip will get it working problem i.e. slightly altering it's orentation or moving it closer of futher away from the spark plug.

So it will actually idle normally?

Have you throw the timing light on any other plugs?
Maybe it just isn't running a strong spark at idle and strengthens once revving harder...

its runs sweet as (apparently its sposed to run like s**t) and the timing light works perfectly on all of our other cars. it does make a lil noise but nuthin as loud as wen the light come on. the only reason i was playin with the timing is because appently it was very advanced thus cause it to not start easy.

strange... well from wat you describe it would seem
that the gun is not recieving enough current to make
it light up, the gun works on other cars so its not
the gun. and once you rev it it works...

so its got to be your setup. i am running a
elec dizzy and a normal coil too and no probs.

you have a weak spark from something... alternator,
bad connection, short jumping, bad spark wire,
i think its been mentioned to check the spark by holding
the plug against the block so it sparks and see what
it looks like. and go from there,

at least without having a conventional dizzy, you
can eliminate points.
