7mgte check engine light Tue, 18 January 2005 13:27 Go to next message
The person who did the conversion on my car never hooked up the checke engine light.

Now, if I understand correctly, the "W" in the diagnostics box is the check engine light.

Turning the key to "ON", gives me 0.5volts between "W" and earth.
This should be 12 volts yes?

I decided to bridge TE1 and E1, and see what happened (I am not starting car here).
I then have 0 volts between "W" and earth.

Am I missing something here?

I check it at the ECU end with the same results.

The W pin pulls to ground to turn the Check Engine light on. So W should be at approximately earth potential when IGN is on. Just connect the lamp between +12 and W and it should all be fine (that is what I did on the 1J).

Regards

Peter

Yeah, that was my thinking, but there was no continuity between W and ground when I tested it.

I'll get a globe and check just in case.

You should have NO contontinuity until the ECU tells the W point to earth...
The ECU controls the W point, when a problem arises, it turns it on (By earthing it), so with the 12V +ve constant on a light, and the other side conected to W, the only time the light will come on is if the ECU detects a problem and throws it to earth.

Most ECUs only earth things, they do not actually send the power out, the +ve is from the battery, and the -ve is controlled via the ECU...
So that, when you check for continuity, you will not have any, unless the ECU is saying you have a problem...

Correct.

BUT, with the key ON, but the motor not running, the check engine light should be on, and therefore there should be continuity between earth and W.

Correct??

The reason I need to double check this, is because the 5mge is the opposite.

Globe is constantly earthed, ecu gives it 12v upon error.

You are correct there...
Heres an idea I'm going to throw up in the air...

The ECU when it first turns the light on when you flick to "On" finds no connection... So it turns off...

Maybe find a 12V +ve wire, tap into it... Hold a glob on it, and connect another wire through the W hole and put onto the other part of the globe (I'm guessing you know how the poles in a light glode work) and then flick it to "On" the light MIGHT come on...

So have you actually checked the wiring diagram that it IS the check engine light on W?

Yeah, pretty sure its the W
That was the reason of this post, and it was confimed

http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/d/D_34. gif
Shows it as W.

I will try hook up a globe to it.
See what happens.

I have a few things unplugged at the moment, so more than likely that is affecting it.

Okay...
Definetely W connector then...
Next question... Are you working on the correct Plug etc?
From memory, you should be working with the plug on the left?
Check the Ign voltages etc to be sure...

Try plug everything back in and try the continuity again...

I've tried the ECU, the Diagnostics plug, and the one that would normally plug in to the loom to the dash guages and lights.

Its the correct one (GR-G, Grey with a Green stripe).

I'll play around with it tonight, hopefully have an update tomorrow.
