Help, i am not much of a smart one when it comes to lubes and what you should run in your car, but i know its vitally important and u gotta use the right stuff. What i need to know is wht is the best thing to have in an engine sitting idle as far as oils go? it needs to be chilling out-of-car for a good while, maybe4-6 weeks, and i dont want to cause any potential damage to the internals or bearings of the motor. Its an 18RGeu and it got sent to me as a dry-sump, which i was a bit wairy about :s should there have been oil in it on delivery? it was jsut the transportsers needed it dry sump, but now its here i want to fill it with something that will protect everything long term until the engine is put into my car.
OIL EXPERTS Give me your views. Thanks heaps if you do,
And whats best for a stocky 18RG efi once i have it running? im thinking pennzoil as a fair few mechanics use it?
cheers
Guy

I don't know how well to trust this info but I was told to put some transmission fluid into each cylinder. I think that this sounds pretty sketchy, I will be waiting to hear others opinions.
I bet you must be getting keen to put that engine in and start flexing.

my 4agze has been sitting on my garage floor for about 2 months after it sat in the car for 2 months and will remain dormant for a few more months till i work out some big brakes on the sprinter
but if your worried about it you can buy a fogging oil which is designed for engines which are left to stand for a while. its just an oil which is sorta more sticky.

4 to 6 weeks will not worry it in the least. if your worried just unplug the coil lead and crank it to bring oil pressure up before firing.

Sticky? i was thinking maybe a thinner consistency lubricant but i havevent the slightest idea so??.. fogging oil you say,
so leaving it for a couple of months without use and a dry sump will not damage and/or affect engine life? is it healthier tho will some sort of oil in there?? my guess is yes so i am definately going to get some of the above mentioned lube if not some decent pennzoil gear.. Anyone have any other opinions on this type of oil or should i not worry as much.. Sorry i just dont wanna see anything get harmed or decay from mistreatment while it gets cleaned etc..
Cheers Heaps
and yes im itching to crank this thing over and get it in there, but im not made of money rite now and theres a few more necessities i have to get like new clutch, extractors, new coil/s & ignitor, re-core my radiator so its ultra-reliable($$$), new surge tank(want a stainless one:D), then i can think about fitting it...
All good, all in the making
Peace

personally i'd leave it - think about it - while it sits any oil in the top end will drain/leak down and all end up in the sump anyways.
what i would do prior to starting it up first time is take the rocker cover off, and pour oil over the cams - give em a good soak in the stuff.
i'm open to suggestion on the next bit, but, to maybe help things along a bit, maybe take the plugs out and put a little oil in the plug hole - so that the oil can travel down the side of the bore - face it - if the engine has been sat for a long time, the walls of the bores may have rust ect on them (which will soon disappear on first startup) but just an idea to help first start....
yes it will be smoky first go, but, as suggested, either turn it over by hand before first start or turn it over with the starter motor, just disconnect your coil first...

i have whatever oil was in the motor when i bought the car and while im waiting for my brake upgrade before i drop the motor in im gonna rebuild it sorta like just replace sump gasket, rear main seal, CAS seal and re-seal the cam cover. not doing head gasket cause its a TRD lower conpression one so i aint waisting it but yeah after that i prob aint even gonna put oil in it till i put it in the car however long that will be.
