Inspecting W58 gearbox? Wed, 19 January 2005 12:56 Go to next message
Hi all,

Looking at getting a w58 gearbox and was just wondering if there would be any checks I could do to make sure that there is nothing wrong with it?

The box isnt currently in a car at the moment so that could be a problem.

So is it just simply a matter of waiting till its in the car and seeing how well it works?

Thanks

Engaging each gear and turning the input shaft by hand can sometimes reveal a dodgy box (ie it should turn freely and not make any crunchy noises), but apart from that it's pretty hard to gauge its condition without actually driving it or completely pulling it apart.
