Standard 2L 5speed RA23 performance

Hi all,
I have recently picked up an RA23 - my first Toyota - what a great car they are!.
It is as standard as they come.
Being a new boy to the world of Toyota (and not being a mechanic) my question is what are the options for tweaking the performance of the RA23.
I've heard that the 18rg is a good transplant but for the time being I wanted to keep the original motor in the car as it has done relatively low mileage and feels really strong (although not that zippy).
Is it worthwhile doing things like cam work, extractors, carbies etc or is it cheaper and easier to just go the 18rg. Any idea of costs, part types and suppliers to go either way would be appreciated.
Thanks
Donjmo

Cams, extractors and carbies will end up costing more than an 18R-G transplant, but won't be as fast. The 18R-G is the most cost-effective mod you can do without spending big bucks (eg 1G-GTE conversion).

I've got a sets of extractors on my 2 main RA23's. They can make a little difference but have to be careful that you don't loose too much back presure otherwise she runs like a dog.
On one that I've recently bought it's got a webber carbie on it and it goes really well. You don't have to floor the accelerator to get the car to move. I haven't really driven that car too far as it isn't registered but it seems to go really well. The engine has been rebuilt as well so it goes better than my other celicas.
18R's are bullit proof and once tuned right can run really well.
Good luck and have fun

??
You dont buy a 2T-G for a RA23.
Sell the car and buy a TA23 if you want a 2T-G.
18R-G is the way to go for a RA23... that is unless your power hungry and want to move to a newer engine. 1G anyone?

I don't think I want to drive a ra23 with a more powerful engine because then I'd want to replace mine and I can't afford that. Mine sounds fast which is the main thing!!!
