Difficulty in rebuilding Power Steering pump Thu, 20 January 2005 05:30 Go to next message
Hey All,

My 5M-E's Power Steering seals all have perished and leaking everywhere. Is it easier for me to buy a seal kit ($66 exc GST from Toyota) or is it better for me to take it to a professional and get charged $250 to replace/rebuild the power steering pump.

Cheers.

provided you can get the pulley off, it should be easy.

power steering pumps are pretty easy to reseal....the ones that i have done you dont even have to take the pulley off just makes it a bit easier....the ones i have done there is a clip on the back of the shaft of the pump that you can take off and pull the shaft out the front with the pully....but not sure on the 5m pump....either way shouldnt be too hard....another thing, just make sure you reassemble it in original order.....and last (happened once to me and a few times to other people) ive rebuilt a pump and installed it in the car and it wouldnt pump and the steering was locked up, so i stripped it down again and nothing was wrong, re-assembled it exactly the same as before and walla it works the second time around......didnt understand!
