does anyone here own a BMW old model like E28 or those made in 1980s...
i would like to know how reliable are those older models and are the spare parts expensive and pain in the arse to get?

My bro has a old skool beamer, e28 528i 85, there decent i guess with the right amount of care, but should inspect them before buying them 2nd hand of course, parts i think are pretty pricey, recently paid about 270 roughly for 2nd hand ignition coil and leads, plus labour, and new fuel filter/tank/pump around $750, so i think they are pretty obtainable. hope this helps

I've got an `85 E30, if it's looked after then you don't get any issues. Parts can be expensive sometimes, depending on what it is but if you do the wrench time yourself then the cost really isn't that high.

In my opinion i'd be taking the ae86 over the beamers, very heavy cars, well the 5 series is, possibly because the power steering fluid is leaking, but in general its a heavy car, good torque, probably get better features, but ae86 would be more of a fun car to drive.

Yes thanks B1 for doping me in
Well after owning a e28 , you could say that if your are after a medium size early german car there are way cheaper to maintain than mercs . I have had lots of early European cars and there very reliable looked after well . The one atm has never let me down in three years .
Items to watch on those models are :
cam and rocker arm wear , even at low k's {walk away}
timing chain rattle with high k's {walk away}
fuel pumps noisy on it way out {L jetronic easy system}
ball joint ends in steering system worn
in later 1985> rear trailing arm passive toe bushes
Parts are relatively cheap with lots of general parts like brake pads , fuel system , service parts fitting lots of European cars like volvo etc as well . There was about five importers of these parts in Australia say three years ago .Here now there are maybe three left and there stocks are not as good , so for some items you have to go to the dealer which aren't that bad .
Ie : complete set of brakes / discs / pads etc should cost $350
Really looking at it you wouldn't bother with a early model unless it was really well maintained . The 1985> model has lots of changes and is a much better handling car . But as the market prices have crashed badly this year 1989> e34 are really cheap and will continue to drop . And the e34 was rated as the best medium size four door sedan for many years , handles like a small car , and even smaller sized engine models still leave most domestic falcons and commodores for dead on a country road .
