you have opened a can of worms bigger than you could have imagined, time to get googling.

to port or seal, as well as the volume depends on the parameters of your sub, i designed a sealed box for my 10 inch sub a while back and it took a lot of effort.

but here are some basics.

if you want faithful reproduction of sound and have heaps of power to spare, go sealed

if you want fooley sick bass doof doof then go ported

a sealed box will generally be smaller than a ported one

I'd say that it's how much boot space you're willing to sacrifice. And how much you want to spend.

But, for a 10inch sub... you can probably get away with a small sealed box.
As for making a box. I've made heaps of speaker boxes. It depends on SO many scientific thingies to get it right. Just buy a cheap 10inch box and rid yourself of the financial burden of having to make your own. Most people can't tell the difference in sound anyway.

At Strathfield Car Radio, they've got POWERED subs in boxes, for $88. These are good value!

For more details on making boxes, properly, PM me.

Without going in to fine detail...

Sealed is for tight bass.
Make it about 0.8 cubic Litres.

Ported is for low droney bass.
Make it double sealed volume.

As pointed out, its cheaper to get a prefabbed box, unless you want something to specifically fit somewhere.

See what different boxes do to the response of your sub. Make sure you look at the phase shift and lag that each box induces, not just the decibel curve. A big Lag will sound crap with most music, coz the bass-drum will go thump 1/2 a second late. Verrrrrry annoying.

Like was said earlier: Sealed is accurate and tight, but needs big power to go low & loud.

Ported is loud, and can go quite low, but the lower you tune the box, the looser it'll sound.

have a look at what you can come up with for a bandpass box. They can be quite effective if designed and built right.
