Engine rebuilders in ACT; and GT-4 engine options Thu, 20 January 2005 23:21 Go to next message
Folks,

The 3S-GTE in my 1990 GT-Four has recently overheated and blown the head gasket and damaged the head. It's currently with the good folks at Canberra Toyota for examination for further damage. The engine is original and hasn't been re-conditioned or modified in its 14 1/2 year lifespan. I suspect it'll require a total rebuild, and while I'm sure Canberra Toyota will do a good job, they'll be expensive and I'm wondering if they're my only real option.

My two principal questions are these:

1. Are there any good Toyota engine re-builders in the ACT region (incl. Queanbeyan)?

2. Apart from re-building the 3S-GTE, what are the pros and cons of other options which I might have, for example:
(a) replacement 3S-GTE, including that from a GT-Four Group A Rallye;
(b) replacement with another Toyota engine (e.g. Supra turbo);
(c) replacement with another engine (e.g. WRX boxer turbo)?

Many thanks, Geoff K.

your best bet is going with a replacement motor ..

if ytour interested - take a look at out for sales section - A guy in adelaide had a complete St205 Frontcut for sale - this motor/gearbox would be an awesome swap into a st185 ..

it needs a some work to wire it in - seeing the ecu is diifferent - but for 4500 - its Cheap compared to rebuilding !

Zasa, thanks, I thought of Neal Bates Automotive, but it's no longer in the phonebook, and I'm not sure if it's open any more.

Cheers, Geoff K.

Zasa, many thanks (White/Yellow Pages search only gave me the numbers for Rick Bates' driving school). I'll give Neal Bates Automotive a call tomorrow (Monday). Maybe they don't advertise because they get enough work through word-of-mouth!

Cheers, Geoff K.

Nah, they are still there, and doing quite well. Be warned though, they are very costly. But the work that they do is certainly top notch.
