Hi guys, have had a couple of guys post about this in the 'for sale' thread for my supra
http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=53455&start=0&rid=1540&S=2fde8a67518 78ea26424423bcaa0b394
Apparently when i go to Japan for 12 months, if I own a car over there for that time, then i can bring it back as a personal import. Does anyone have any experience in having done this or know a lot about it? I'm assuming if its a 'personal import' then the 15 year rule doesn't apply. Does it also mean there are less compliance costs?
If you guys know any good websites about this that would also be really helpful.
don't want to waste an opportunity like this to get me an awesome soarer or a Mk4 supra....mmmm...twin-turbo goodness.....

Yes that's 100% correct.
Go to Japan, you must own the car for a year and then you can bring it in, no matter what car it is.
My jap teacher did the same thing when he came here.
Just remember though, you'll have to buy a parking space in Japan. Not sure how much it costs. Depends on where you're staying as well. You cannot own a car in Japan without purchasing a parking space for the vehicle because it's so dense and congested.
I'm planning to do what you're doing in a few years' time
Go and get that RZ baby! w00t!

thanks for the link joshstix. Looks like there is a fair bit of paperwork involved, but would be worthwhile.
i think the big problems are you have to show:
"* A parking approval in the applicant’s name showing that the applicant had permission to park the vehicle
* Compulsory Tax and Insurance "
not sure how much these costs but knowing how expensive everything else is in Japan, it would be a fair bit.
I'm living in kanagawa, which is the area next to tokyo (45 mins by train). Its still congested, so could be a problem.
thu187- hows the japanese going? nihongo wa jouzu ni narimashita?
