Well, I'm extemely happy with my 97 model. The 1MZ-FE is a sweet motor giving a nice balance of performance and economy that makes it well suited to my 1000km a week of commutting.

The best camry is ironically a Vienta. The 1996 Toyota Vienta Touring 5 speed manual. It's the fastest, rarest, and the most bestest. I'll drag any of you to prove it!

AND it's for sale. See link in sig.

Had a 97/98? Camry sedan as a work car (along with a VT Commodore, EL Falcon & Verada), out of those the Camry was the pick of the bunch. Great straight line performance, economy & safety. The bloke at work ended up rolling his car along the Pacific highway - the car was destroyed but he walked away with barely a scratch.

because this is a Camry poll. please read my first post in this thread I respect you don't like Camrys but this is a fight free thread

Fr3aK thats a very sweet looking Camry that one sounds great too.!!! Very Happy It would be worth a bit. I won't drag it with my 1989 Camry CS. I know who will win that!! Razz

I don't doubt you for any second that its fast. A mate of mine has a 1999 Camry V6 5spd manual and its a Rocket!!! Evil or Very Mad

I like the Camry as it has every thing I want in a car. adiqute performance, excellent fuel ecconomy and reliable. I've got 216,000kms up on my Camry. it still runs well. never misses a beat. uses fuck all oil and water and is an all round good car.

I Dunno if anyone else agree's with me on this one, but i think the previous model camry like the one in shaneblacks avatar looks like it should of been a sports car simualr to the R34, with a rear wing, rear wheel drive and a 2JZ-GTE that would be a fuckin sports car with the looks to match.

next time you see one of them camry's (sedan version) try picture it with a rear wing and tell me that doesn't look like a sweet car.

I own a 89 SV21 Camry with 225,000 kms on it, and its a fairly good car and bloody reliable, but it would be much better as a manual though.
Dad owns a 99 Vienta 3.0 V6 and it goes ok too.

My SV21(3S-FE) Camry is a manual.I think there better in manual form myself (especally of the mark and up hills). I think there also good in an auto form myself. they may not be as quick as a manual, but they are still very reliable. Mum and dad have had there 1989 SV20 Camry, (1s-ci motor) for over 13 years, it's an auto and it still goes great, that over drive feature the auto's have is very handy on the highway. thats where I reckon an auto Camry will perform at it's best Very Happy.

My Camry is a 3S-FE, I have installed a pod filter onto it, and a basic heat shield. It sounds MUCH better now, and you notice a bit of difference planting your foot from 60 km/h. Its a bloody reliable car and its great on the highway at around 125 where it uses bugger all fuel..

As my above comment was slightly biased, i wouldn't mind testing the latest Sportivo. Newer engine, different car... could surprise me.

Yes, those new ads are getting to me! I'll never buy one, i'd just like to compare the old to the new.

Has anyone here driven a new Sportivo Camry hard? How did it go?

I'd have to say the very latest model, but if somehow they could put the rear end of the '97 model onto it it would be perfect.

Except for the jza80 and the '95 onwards soarer, the '97-'02 (?) camry has the best looking rear end on a car ever.

i did an advance driving course in it a few months ago, and it handled very well Very Happy
going into a corner it didnt understeer very much and i found it was fairly stable too.
in the way of power it is pretty good, although it is nothing too flashy, it is sufficent for my needs anyway Wink

I voted 97-02 cause we had a 99 model. It was a very nice car to drive. That is until my daughter wrote it off. It all ended well though cause the insurance money financed my 66 Mustang Coupe. Smile

What sort of fuel econ do you guys get out of the 1MZ-FE equipped Camry's? My girlfriends has one at the moment, and we are putting in $50 a week and managing only 360-380kms out of it!?

Cheers.

Re: the best camry? VZV21 of course Fri, 11 February 2005 06:34 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Narrow bodied 1991 model, $31,000 new JDM, quad cam 2.5 litre vee 6, four wheel disc s all around, top speed around 240 kph and thats with an auto gearbox, climate control, AM stereo yeah 693 magic, electric windows all around and mirrors, power button on atu and overdrive 4th gear. I bought one in 1999 with 42000 km on odo from local accountant. Now has 160,000 km and the best high speed driver I have ever owned. 15 inch alloys come as standard and it is nothing like an SV21. The only giveaway is the V6 24 valve badge on the rear boot lid. Close second is my clapped out SV21 Wagon 1987 model 2L four ex SA police on LPG, I have pulled a tandem trailer loaded with a Datsun 280ZX on 5 or six occasions now in past two years. 1st trip was Penrith to Hamilton in 24 hours, next was Cantebury to Hamilton, then Wentworthville to Hamilton, all hardtops at 1450 KG plus trailer 1900 KG all up towing weight in a 1000 kg wagon. Then I did Coffs Harbour to Hamilton in 30 hours towing a JDM Fairlady 280Z, and then pulled my280Z from Coober Pedy. I occasionally forget to put oil in and it rattles to tell me to do that. 233,000 km over 25,000 towing heavy loads. Last towing trip the Aussie Allrounder ii's ex Bob jane in 2001 , well one went down and we checked the Bob Jane brochure and found the tyre expired at 57000 km. We do Hamilton to Tailem bend on 45 litres of LPG for under $20.00
I figure in the life of the car since I bought it in 2001 at 160,000 km and now nearly 234000 I have put in 74000/400 which is 185 tank fills at 50 litres per tank at average of 50cpl at $4650 cf 65 litres per tank of ULP at an estimated cost of $12000, given the cost of the car was $4500 I have paid for the car twice over with savings on LPG..

i have a 2003 camry sportivo 2.4l

drove a gen 2 courtesy car when my car was in for repairs...god it sucked Razz

driven my aunties 97 vienta v6. its fast and smooth in a straight line. it body rolls more than my car and the steering wheel feels too light...handles like a boat basically Razz

and my car...yeah its slow. 0-100kph in just over 10 secs. cornering is good but i'm planning to get a rear sway bar or might drop it with eibach springs around 1.5"

also changed the tyres a few days ago. car is 21 months old. damn it feels so much smoother again Smile i ordered the same tyres the car came with - michelin vivacy but got the higher type michelin energy mxv8 which is a little more expensive than the vivacy. i payed the vivacy wheels price and i already had discount Smile

out of all the camrys the latest has the biggest interior and also looks the nicest.

Yeah!!! That vehicle you describe is the VZV21 Camry, loaded with the almighty 2VZFE. A540E ECT Transmission. Very good power out of this baby, bit of a slippy transmission tho :S.

Don't you mean 1991? The 1992 was the first year of the Gen 3 Widebody MCV10 chassis.

No 1992, my camry was the last to roll off the production line in September 1992, and yes the GEN3 came in 1992.
