i've been looking at replacing the old worn out 18rc with something a little better... we have a 22r at home, with less then 50K on the clock... how hard would it be to stick this engine in an ra28? i know they were in celicas at one stage, but i THINK they were the ra60s... i can't find any definite information, how do they go about fitting in the engine bay? and what gear box is the easiest solution? i'm only looking at it as a tempory solution, 'cause i'd like to go a 1ggte later, or perhaps even a 1uzfe... but the 18rc is really getting old, and i need something soon, so the 22r could be the cheapest option... what's your thoughts?

Only the RA65 ('85) celica got the 22RE in Aus; the RA60 ('82/'83) got the 21R-C.
I believe some of the US xA2xs came with 20Rs. Some people in the US on the Old Celica Club mailing list at www.celicas.org have put that engine into cars like yours.
IIRC the mounts are different between 18R & 20/21/22R, but someone else will know.

yep, 22r was ra65 in aust. comes with a w55 behind it stock, so that'd be a prettyu good idea to keep. it's a bit of a truck motor, but it has prettyu good torque, and in the skinny little ra28 it'd get it moving reasonably well. just remember there'll be an EFI conversion involved tehre as well!

If the 22R mounts are the same as the 21R (im sure they are), then itll bolt in no worries as i know the 21R's are the same as the 18R.
Ive got a 21R in my Corona (instead of the original 18R).

i kinda had a feeling that it'd virtually bolt in... 'cause they're all from the same "R" family... and the w55 g'box is the same as whats in the __________?
efi conversions aren't THAT hard are they? just a matter of lift pump, swirl tank, etc etc... obviously there's the cpu and all too...
anything else i'm forgetting?

no, the efi bit isn't hard - just checking you were aware it wont be a plug-n-p[lay.. there will be other mods required.
unless you get the carby hilux version, as stated
