easiest brake upgrade ke30 Sun, 23 January 2005 13:35 Go to next message
im lookin to do the easiest brake upgrade for
the rolla, so the more bolt in it is and less
modifying has to be done the better...

so what exactly has to be done for ta22, xt130,
ke70 and cressida brake conversions?

full strut seems the easiest option avaliable

yes i have researched this topic.

Well, I replaced the front struts on my KE50 with those from an XT130.. Was all pretty much bolt in, except for the obvious spring holder swap or chassis hack.

I'm using RA40 struts and lower control arms. Need to swap spring holder as well and maybe adjustable strut tops. Will also require 14" rims to fit the brakes.

All a matter of what you need... Personally I put the XT130 struts on because you can then go down the Peugeot disc/Hilux calipers road. Very nice combo, apparently stops pretty well. =P

As for master cylinder. It all depends on what caliper you use. Best bet, match the master cylinder size to whatever you pulled it out of. If it's not far off, you should be able to get away with it. However, if the pedal goes to far (ie. to the floor) and you still ain't stopping, obviously you'll need to up the size.

I used the RA40 gear because I got it for free.

I have only test fitted one strut at the moment so I can't comment on how good it works.

The RA40 master cylinder can't be used as one of the brake lines fouls on the strut tower.

The standard KE30 master cylinder is 11/16" bore and the RA40 master cylinder is 13/16" bore which is stuff all difference so you may get away with using the KE30 master cylinder. I am looking at master cylinders and boosters at the moment and just this afternoon I test fitted an AE71 booster. It fit nicely and is bigger than the KE30 one. I'm making a trip to pick'n'payless on saturday to look at master cylinders to see if I can find a suitable 13/16" unit to use.

If I had to buy struts and stuff I would probably go with the xt130 ones purely because as gr8r-x said you can then upgrade to the hilux/pug combo.

I have pictures of the strut fitted to my car here
