SW20 / ST205 head and fuel rail differences Mon, 24 January 2005 10:03 Go to next message
I need to know if there's a way that an ST205 fuel rail can fit on an SW20 head. The head is apparently off an SW20, with slight differences to it than that of the ST205. Everything essential to the head's operation is good to go, but when the head was bolted on this afternoon, we went to bolt up the fuel rail and found that the o-ring size of the ST205 fuel rail was bigger than the cavity in the SW20 head. Either I need to find some o-rings that will mate up the ST205 fuel rail to the SW20 head, or another way to adapt the fuel rail to the head; or I'll have to do something out of the ordinary to the fuel rail, like get one custom-made. Hell, everything else on this car is custom-made, why not finish the job? Laughing

Any help appreciated. Wink

Are you sure it's a gen3 head (off a late 93+ sw20)?
I've got a spare gen2 fuel rail if you want to give it a go.

As far as we can tell it is... I might need to try that fuel rail if I can't source another solution. Will it be able to take my 540cc injectors though?

As far as I know, the gen3 injectors are a straight fit to the gen2 rail. Someone should be able to give you a definate answer though.

andrew i had a similar problem i brought a hks fuel rail little did i know (miss informed, and still stuck with it) but the rail is only to suit a gen3 fuel rail i had to get one custom made also the gen 3 rail will not fit with out lots of modification, its prolly cheaper to get a custom one made.

also you sw20 i assume is from a 89 - 93 mr2 if so gen 2?

Do your GenIII intake and exhaust manifolds fit on the new head?
They will not fit on a GenII or GenI head so if they fit you've definately got yourself a GenIII.

It has oval intake ports if it's the head that was for sale on the forum so it's definately not a Gen2.

Interesting news that's just come to hand, apparently the new head is off an N/A engine. So this means it's off a 3S-GE MR-2 instead. Mad What does this mean for injectors and rail possibilities? Josh, Brad, Toobs?

DavaDave, I've left a message on your phone, I'll be interested in having a squizz at your fuel rail to size up compatibility. I hope I don't have to drop injector sizes though. Sad

The head is all wrong, I'm going to have to get it removed and fix up the other one instead. I have no choice now, nothing fits. The rocker cover is all wrong, the section that bolts the head to the throttle body is wrong, the fuel rail is totally wrong for it, the injector holes are are too small for the injectors, I could go on, but for now I'm gonna go off at the dude that sold me this head. Mad I got it worked up and everything so it could go back onto my block and finished up. I've spend over a grand so far on nothing!!

This guy told me it was for an ST205, and it's a 3S-GE head instead. Subsequently nothing fits up the way it should. Essentially it IS the same head as I'd use, but the fittings are completely different!

The inlet and exhaust gaskets aren't the problem. They fit fine, but the rocker cover and the lugs for the throttle body are just wrong.
