I don't know about the one on the ECU but the external one sounds like it could be to do with a ballast resister which could be "dead". That is supplying the coil with a 12v load when it should only be seeing something like around 6v while the car is running.

Are you running a performance coil with an aftermarket ignition system?
Some coil and ignition system combinations can cause problems... esp. if you are running a HEI type ignition with a performance coil.

Are you blowing coils or ignitors? From the description where you say the one on the computer died I'd assume it's an ignitor.
Are you using an aftermarket computer? If so I'd be taking a look at the dwell times.

I had similar issues about 4 yrs ago.
Perhaps you are using the wrong type of coil?
I cannot rightly remember which is which (something about transistor type or some such thing) but I do recall that there are differences between coils for electronic ignition and coils for points type systems (bosch do the electronic ones black and the points type red).

jason is spot on re. bosch coils.
the ones designed for points cannot handle the increased dwell time of an electronic ignition system, and blow up relatively quickly

if your running aftermarket ignitors and coils
best to use
bosch 008 ignitors and bosch hec715 i think coils
at least they will be suited to the coils
bosch coils have low resistance between the + and -
so they tend to fry cheap ignitors
but when using all bosch parts i have never had probs

ignitor plus coil ?
lol, looks like i got myself into a little trouble now.
okay, when were talking about coils are we talking about the actual coil pack in gze sense the twin coils ?
and aftermarket ignitiors is that the one in the aftermarket ecu that sends the pulses out to the leads ?
sorry, dont under stand the jargon all to well at this stage.
besides whatever came with the aftermarket ecu i.e just the ECU everything is just plain stock.
thanks for thee replies though.
its sorta making sense
sideshow are these coils/ignitor for the gze? and where can i get these?

u still havnt told us what engine
what ecu
etc
if u dont understand some of the stuff we are talking about
maybe get a proffessional to see it
but basically
the ecu sends signal to ignitor
then the ignitor fires to coil
unless u have microtech with onboard ignitors

i own a 4agze twin coil pack style.
EMS ecu.
im thinking of replacing both the coil pack and the ignitor.
and it does have an onboard ignitor because i replaced it in the ecu when i sent it back to ems.

well i have had this problem only with ems ecus
if i were you i would ring them up
what ignitors are you running
if you are runnin the 4agze ignitor the dwell time
in the ems program might be set incorrectly
best of writing down what setup you have
what nodel ems
what ignitor it might have onboard ignitors
what coils
then ringing them up
must be a common thing with ems

I'm running with the external ignitor unit on my stock GZE coil packs with not a problem at all.

well i got an external one just the otherday,
made by EMS but that failed to last me two starts.
i will have this " dwell time " looked into.
ems does not seem to be worthwhile as it first looked.
