AE86 Quaife Quick Steer Tue, 25 January 2005 23:41 Go to next message
Just trying to find out if anyone has actually sucessfully installed one of these racks. The mob which i send my racks to in Syd has informed me that there is an issue with the one i have as it binds up on one end. Ill be getting it back quite soon to play with again myself.

If someone has installed one it would be good to know. Also if there are pics around that woudl be great.

Cheers

When you say blinding , is it over traveling in one direction ?{which direction} Have there missed a piece of the end stop bushing {or is it still the worn old part }. Also will this be a problem in the car since the lock will have to be limited anyway ? To stop those fourpots hitting the caster rod , and those wide tyres hitting the inner guard once the rack is installed .

As far a rack places in Melbourne its a case of DIY since there all incompetent fools .

I fitted a Quaife quick rack over a year ago, it was an easy job, I rebuilt the rack with all new genuine toyota bits, this is, rack ends, boots, tir rods and pinion bearings, Quaife obviously only supply the rack gear and pinion gear, I have had no problems and really like the quick (very!) steering!

How notable is the difference, and what did it cost you all up? I'm kind of tempted for the KE70 (which has an AE86 rack in it already)

It's very noticeable, especially the weighting of the steering, it becomes very heavy! obviously the amount of caster you run will affect this! my brother actually got me the rack gears when he was on a trip in the U.K. then airfeighted them back, I built up another rack using genuine toyota parts, rack ends, tie rods, boots and bearings, I set the preloads and built the rack up myself and wheel aligned myself, total parts came to about $1000 not including my labour, you could save alot of money using non genuine parts but why would you!! If you can afford it, I highly recommend it, the steering is heavy but you get use to it very quickly, at first I thought I may be driving down the road over correcting due to the gearing but this is not the case, the feed back is excellent, I know exactly what the front wheels are doing!! (please note though that my front suspension consists of cusco fabricated rose jointed lower control arms and caster rods....very expensive but again HIGHLY recommended! my whole suspension is rose jointed with no rubber or synthetic bushes anywhere)On a drive up my favourite hills run the maximum amount of steering lock used was about 150degrees and this was to turn around a low speed hairpin so you can see that very minimal steering angle is required to change direction, if you can afford it....DO IT!!

While someone other than me has gone thread mining I'll ask; what's the difference between the KE70 and AE86 rack?

As far as I can tell no difference! When I put the rack in the RA28, I got a KE70 rack and sat it next to a AE86 rack and both appear identical. The amount of turns lock to lock was the same also.

Cheers

Ill get some pics this weekend of where it binds up. I think i will have to make up some little spacers for it instead. It will limit my lock by a bit, but i doubt i would use the full extent of the lock on the track. Also hopefully having the AE86 power steer arms will make things a bit easier.

I found out about it from the quaife web site, but this was long ago!! They will not sell it to you direct but instead put you onto an agent, I believe that Quaife make the rack BUT they actually make it for some one, his name is Richard. If you email them they will keep putting you onto him, when I bought mine, I actually emailed Quaife first, and they said they had none in stock as they had to make a batch, but once made I would have to buy of richard, I think from memory his company is called RMsport and it's located in the UK.

I have put the PS steering arms in only, and I find the steering is quick enough just like that. I have a new quaife rack also, but have not installed this yet. I am afraid that with both the quaife rack and PS short arms the steering will be VERY quick, maybe too quick?

I've been very tempted for the KE70 for a long time... but $1000 seemed a bit much. If the parts are only $350, that's a lot more realistic. Jonny, if you're not keen on using yours, maybe we can talk?? Very Happy

I've got an AE86 crossmember in my car, had the matching steering rack until I killed it, and replaced it with an old KE70 one I had. Stuffed if I could tell the difference...
