Well it sounds like it is comong from the head...... I have a 20v silver top, there is this remote knocking noise in the head (or so it seems) around the 2-3000 rpm mark.
Has anyone had this prob, if so what was it, could it be the VVt pully or a loose/bent/sticking valve?
PLEASE help me here i am pulling my hair out trying to sus this one out.

lemme see....
remove rocker cover and turn over the motor and see what happens..
i also vaguely remember a number of threads froma few years ago saying that the VVT actuator caused similar noises and lack of power.. might be worth a google..

take off rocker cover, turn motor over with.. a spanner, ie BY HAND... so you can turn it little by little and verify that the valves and cams are ok..

How frequent is the knocking? Does it do it when you start the car for a moment?
I have heard similar things, it sounds like its comming from the head, but its turned out the be the bottom end bearings.
When i have heard this at idle car sounds normal, and about 3000rpm you can start to hear the knocking and when the motor is trying to start.

ok well i will try what you suggested 'oldrolla', thanks for that one.
Fattony: the noise starts when i hit the gas and at about 2500- 3300 (or so) then it is not so bad. how do i tell if it is bottom end bearings? If it is how do i replace them ones, isn't it a case of matching pairs to the block?? that will be a fun one right?
thanks for all the help peoples.

Like Fattony has said - It may well be that a big end bearing has carked it. If this has happened the piston can hit the cylinder head.
How do you find it? Drain the oil and pour it through a sieve. If there is any coppery white metal things then it is stuf-fed.
Solution = motor rebuild or another import.

we replaced the bottom end bearings with ones out of another 20v block, they were all good so that may be it, but i still doubt it.
i know about draining the sump part, the last 2 motors were bottom enders and they were totally f*$%ed

U can take of the sump and pull the lower part of the bearing and inspect it from there.
PS have fun, if it is your better of just getting another motor cause it would prob cost just about as much.

who's there?
i've seen the same thing on a few cars, a tick tick at idle that gets faster with the revs. never thought it would be something as serious as a bearing!
better do the oil drain test!

his car would only do it sometimes though, fine one day, ticky the next, better tell him to drain his oil and puit it through a sieve

AH, no the tick tick that comes from a head that increases with idle, but doesn't sound that bad is the valves. Either not getting enough oil, or having a big of slap in them.
Common in e* falcons
