engine troubles 4afe Wed, 26 January 2005 07:55 Go to next message
Ok well i have a 1991 nova with a 4afe in it.
i changed the battery in the car and since i have had problems with it being really really laggy.

i think i have diagnosed the problem..

the air intake is not a constant stream instead of sucking air in at a constant rate it chuggs..
by chuggs i mean
<insert voice here>chug chug chug chug chug chug<insert voice here>

the car runs like it's got no low down power at all.. and revs up real real slow...

i have tried putting the old battery back in but still the same problem...
i'm really confused.. could i have tripped the throttle sensor or something like that when i changed the battery?
has the car gone into some sort of engine management mode?

in short i need help...

In a way it sounds like there could either be a blockage somewhere or more then likely you've accidently knocked a spark lead off the dissy. Just push on them and see what happens and do the same on the spark plugs as well, as well as the coil.

I had a similar problem after a battery died in my ae95. It was the alternator brushes... once worn out the battery soon dies and problem continues with a new battery as it's not getting any charge. Quite cheap and easy to fix and detect with an alternator tester. Hope it helps Smile

my dad had the EXACT same problem with the 4afc in his AE92. It turned out to be that his dizzy connections (under the top part of the dizzy cap) needed a little bit of a sand down, that was it. But while you are at it, sand down the dizzy spinning thing (i aint to technical with names).

Anyway hope that helps.

i'm going to have a look at it this weekend. so hopefullly i can fix it.,.. did you just get new bushes for the alternator?
where did you buy them from?
i'll open up the dizzy as well then weekend and have a look.
sounds like it might well be the dizzy.. maybe build up due to bad grounding...
thanks heapsguys.

alternater will not make your car laggy. just stop it from charging your battery. anychance you had something left on in the car so when you put the battery terminals on you shaorted out something. is it carby or efi..check u havent shorted anything or is the dizzy loose?? maybe u moved it a touch

Well i replaced my alternater and the car is running alot better.
still laggy but at least the car is running now.. it started to get about 10% power at some times and the battery light came on.. now i'm pretty sure it has got something to do with my fuel because the car is running very rich now.
the 4afe is the efi engine.

I hope you removed and fitted your battery correctly.

Negative off first and on last.
This is to prevent ECU spiking! Hope this isn't your problem. Confused
