Last night I managed to gouge a chunk out of my wheel on a bluestone gutter in the city - pulled in a little close to the apex of a turn... yeah I know I cant drive!

http://members.optushome.com.au/an-d/images/gouged.JPG

I read a few threads on using body filler a while ago and in a flash of brilliance decided to fill the holes in my rim. Confused

http://members.optushome.com.au/an-d/images/bogged.jpg

I figured before I source matching paint ($$) that I should see if the wheel can be rebalanced or is a write off. Hopefully its not too badly out of shape.

So, how long do people reckon that will hold up? I dont think they designed bog for use on wheels...

If it doesn't hold up, that metal epoxy stuff should work.

Man you're up late! I thought I was the only one nursing drunks at this time of night! Very Happy Yeah, I thought about that too - its a good idea, just gotta see how much cash is left after the dust settles from this week. I'll definetly give em a call tomorrow.

EDIT: They're OEM wheels btw, which is why they're sitting in a wrecker. Very Happy I searched before and someone mentioned it was roughly $200 a wheel to get them repaired!?

go grab the spare from the wrecker thats your best bet.

as far as fixing that rim i wouldnt try body filler as i doubt it would stand up particulart well. try some titanium putty. it is a mtealised epoxy works a treat. as far as paiting i wouldnt worry about matching paint too close as long as it is "silver" and not too different you wont notice it.

either that or there are plenty of "touch up" paint mobs that will do wheels and match the paint really well.. ive used color mechanix in the past with success.

but definantly get the spare wheel. you never know when you might stuff one wheel completly as opposed to just cosmetic damage.

Aust162 - yeah, i was shattered and pissed off at myself for doing something so stupid! Embarassed

Cruzida - I searched it on the forums cos i remembered someone else asking about a wheel repairer in melbourne. In their thread they mentioned that it was $200 a wheel to remove gutter rash, and this is a little more extreme so I'm guessing its a lot dearer! I'd prefer to replace it if I can for the same or less money.

MissMR2 - Thanks for the advice, the way I drive (occasionally) I'm bound to munch a wheel sooner or later. I've been paranoid about gutter rash since I got em, parking a metre from the curb - now look what I did! lol Laughing

EDIT: Its actually a lot worse than it looks in those pictures - took a decent chunk out of the edge there.

Try Neway Wheels in Heidelberg mate, i was reccommended them by improvedae86 and they do a good job and not to expensive too. i've had a rim re-rolled that had a fair bit of damage for say $70. i'm not sure as i pick it up tomorrow.

the place is open tomorrow morning aswell...

Cheers

Thanks for the advice / contacts guys!

I rang around yesterday - I'm looking at between $70 and $150 to get it repaired if its only cosmetic. As its just an OEM wheel (which i paid $125 for with a tyre) its probably not worth it. I can get a replacment wheel for $130 - $150, so I'll do that and keep this one as a spare.

I sprayed my dodgy job with dodgy $2 paint from supercheap. Its not quite right... but neither is using bog on a wheel in the first place! The metal is pushed up around the edges of the hole, but you wouldn't notice unless you looked for it. I would grind it back if I have to use it again. Anyway, it looks a little better than having a gaping hole.

After I polish up where the sandpaper grazed the wheel it shouldn't be too noticable.
