Hello all,
Just got my car back on the road. I was sitting at the traffic lights and noticed that my car surges. The tacho can sit about the 800 then go above the 1000 then drop back down to 600.

What is causing this and how can I fix it.
Cheers
Sheena Smile

I thought this was always to do with dirty sensors. The computer is taking readings from the various sensors (temp, air/fuel, airflow, revs etc) and finds something not sitting quite right, so adjusts the idle accordingly, then that sends back all different signals, then it re-adjusts again.

Don't know the reason why, but my Dad's volvo does it like a bitch when it's cold (it's old and driven like a shopping trolley) it surges all over the place! You can even feel it when your driving along as it adjusts the mixtures for cold driving, it surges with power then backs off.....I really don't know what to suggest and would like to know the reason myself

Sorry Crying or Very Sad

Since the car in question has an old 18R-C, I don't think the computer or sensors are going to give too much trouble (since they don't exist). I'd be looking for an air leak somewhere in the inlet system.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have a computer as it is 25 years old. I think I've got a hole somewhere in my exhaust cause you can hear it when the engine is reving high. It's not the manifold gasket because its just been replaced.

Thanks Guys Smile

when i got my engine all back together when i first started it the manifold seal was leaking Sad but if that was the problem i don't see why it would come and go, i say get a fuel treatment bottle put it in the tank and let it clean out your carby as you drive Very Happy fixed the problem with my engine once when it started to surge.

also check your air filter,
might be time for new plugs,?

a list of causes could go on and on so just check a few first and if that doesn't fix it then start looking at other possible causes Smile

Yeah, I've got one of those stupid ramflow air filters on my car and it keeps buring holes in the foam so I guess that could be a problem. The plugs are fairly new. I'll try and put some stuff through the fuel.

I've just put a new head on my car and distributor.

Thanks Guys Smile
