Anyone build scale models??? Just a hobby dedication thread. Thu, 27 January 2005 05:24 Go to next message
Hey all, I have just started building scale models by myself completely for the first time, auto ones currently.
I have started many projects such as a Predator figure/statue etc in the past but with my fathers help (he is a genius in many things and has been building models his whole life as well as screwing with race cars).
Only little squabble so far is have broken the rear windshield on an FC3S I am building, I have bought an extra kit and broke that same rear windshield in it too... GRRRRR
They were both badly moulded, my luck....

Anyone else want to tell stories or express their interest?

Right now I want to buy one of those 1/24 Jada toys Trueno from Initial D and paint that shitty chrome engine like a proper looking silvertop 20V... it annoys me seeing such poor engine detail but god interior ona fairly detailed diecast on a budget.

Haven't built any model cars for a good 10+ years now, and doing it at a young age they were probably fairly average..

I would definitely pick up the paint brushes & glue if I could find a model AE92 Corolla.. Tried a year or two ago and it proved damn near impossible Sad

Hi,

Yeah, I do it - but I'm just a big kid and can't help myself.

I got an RA25 GT model, but haven't built it yet. Most of my stuff is aircraft and miliatry models. The military models is mainly for war-gaming and dioramas, the aircraft is just 'cos they're cool (especially if they got props and filthy big piston engines).

I'm getting into air-brushing now and it's quite good fun.

My next project is to get the last pieces for a large scalextric track and set it up with full diorama and all that. Then, I will invite dudes around to race their cars while sinking some potent home-brew. Smile

www.hlj.com if you guys are interested and put "master grade" as the search and have a bit of a looksy.

last i saw, when i removed all the boxes under my bed i covered my computer table (pretty big table too) and it almost reached the roof Laughing

i also do 1/10 scale RC cars but i havent touched mine in almost a year. worst $700 dollar spent EVER!

I have a few 1/24 scale TE27's and a few celicas as well as a few AE86's that are waiting for me to put them together.

Seems tho, i play with smaller cars than River, and have over 300 AFX cars in various states and ages. When my widdle track is ready, maybe we can race some Supras that Johnny Lightning brought out for its "Fast and Furious" set, and trash the eclipse's and the R34 Gtr's.

By the way, River, have to ask you about airbrushes mate, as i want to get one, to custom paint some of my cars. But that will have to keep for a few months, as i am trying to model some AFX sized Toyotas first. Have a Crown wagon, and AE86 and an RA28 to make first.

Hey River, i have some SCX track if ya need some for your layout.

Yeah I build model cars as a hobby, have been for just over 13 years now. I build F1, rally cars, sports cars (Le Mans etc), touring cars and road cars! My most prized posessions however, are my kits of all of Ayrton Senna's cars stretching from his 1981 Formula Ford to the 1994 Williams.

I built a few models when I was a kid (Knight Rider Trans Am was one of them!) but when I was 19 I decided to try it again seriously and I purchased and built the Tamiya Ferrari F40. Went really well, and I was hooked!

These days I have about 150 or so unbuilt models that I have been accumulating ever since. Unforunately they release them faster then I can build them, and I don't find much time to build these days anyway. I have found that if you want a particular kit you have to buy it now - if you wait till you are actually ready to build it chances are it will be out of production. (Learned that one the hard way!)

I also have quite a few resin kits (mostly from Japan, some from Brazil) of F1 cars that are not made by the plastic model companies. These cost upwards of $300, so when you start buying these you have a serious problem....... Confused

I have been contemplating selling quite a few models off, I have enough to last me well into retirement and a lot of them I quite literally will NEVER get a chance to build (unless I suddenly win the lotto and never have to work another day in my life) so you may see an ad pop up in the For Sale forum one day.

Cheers,
Matt

Id be interested to see what you have if you decided to sell some hehe.

Well I only started seriously like I said, But myt father has like literally hundreds of kits, mostly Ferraris and F1s of all different vintage.

I personally luv jap cars, and the company that produced the widest range etc, is pretty much Fujimi, and I find their kits to be quite medicore to poor in quality.
I have recently got the Sard GT Supra by Tamiya, and for me they top the competion in quality and detail!
I really do hope someone releases a decent FC3S series 5 kit!

My other little addiction I just got onto is Kyosho Mini-Z
small 1/32 scale RC that cna be hoped up for a decent budget and awesome body details!

I have a 1:1 scale AE86 Laughing

well thats what my dad reakons anyway because it spends most of its time in peaces, rather then driven in rally's.

but when i was still at school i used to build and race RC cars, that was the limit of my auctual model building.

Ben.

Well at the moment I am sifting thru all my kits to see what I want to keep and what I am happy to let go. When I put them up for sale you can see if there's anything there you like.

Having built many different brands of model kit over the years I can tell you that Tamiya kits are far and away the best out there. Their quality is superb (some of their new kits are mind boggling, eg Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT) and the kits just fall together, such is the level of engineering they put into them.

Fujimi tend to be hot and cold - some of their kits are fantastic (especially the Enthusiast Series, now 15 years old!) and others are horrible. Hasegawas are okay, their main problem is they tend to cut corners when retooling a model into an updated version. For example, they never updated the interior of their Mitsubishi Evo rally cars from Evo III to Evo VI, even though they were quite different in each one. I, for one, like my models to be accurate! I have never built an Aoshima, so I can't comment on those.

Basic rule of thumb - if Tamiya make the car you are after, then get it!

Whats the Fujimi enthusiast series?
I so hate kits that dont fit together properly.
I end up using super glue, melting some of the plastic frame it comes in to weld and do all sorts of weird stuff to get them to fit..... ugh

I built this awesome supra and the glue dried in a funny way and coated everything with white marks. I have a mean Evo 6 a also built. i used the racing wheels off a calsonic skyline i broke and it looks smick. Also fabricated a larger exhaust to it. I have 2 STI models yet to be done but i really want an AE86 to build.

The Fujimi Enthusiast series were VERY highly detailed 1:24 car kits that were released in the late 80's. Mostly Porsches (356 and many variations of the 911) and Ferraris (Dino 246, Daytona, 288GTO, etc), with a few versions of the Lamborghini Countach as well.

They had almost ridiculous levels of detail, a 911 Cabriolet that I have at home even has cast pistons and crank (even though you'll never see them once it's all put together!) Most of them also came with a little engine stand to display it seperately if you so desire, like a museum piece.

They were out of production for years (see, told you! lol) but some have been re-released lately. Check this link at Hobby Link Japan:

http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljlist.cgi?Maker1=FUJ& amp; amp;Category=AutPas&Dis=2

Scroll to the bottom and you'll see the Enthusiast Series there. And there's some over the page too, so make sure you click on "Next 100".

As I understand it, most of the Fujimi employees who created the Enthusiast Series left not long after, I believe they ended up at Rosso (famous for making the 1/8 scale NSX kit). I don't think the series was a huge commercial success either, so no more cars were produced.

Here are a few online hobby shops you might want to check out.

Hobby Link Japan http://www.hlj.com
MediaMix Hobby (Singapore) http://www.mediamixhobby.com.sg/catalog/index.php
Hobby Search Model Shop http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/plamo/index_e.asp?Bno=&a mp;a mp;Typ1_c=102
Rainbow Ten http://www.rainbowten.co.jp/english/ (not many pictures though)

I have purchased from all of these in the past and they are excellent. You'll find more in these than you'll ever find on an Australian hobby shop shelf!

Matt

I play with Model Trains (or at least used to) Tis' what I did instead of studying for the HSC. At the moment I'm getting back into model cars as I want a "Boys" room in the house complete with pool table, sports stuff and All my dream cars around the place.

http://au.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/simon_t_hall/a lbum?.dir=/9663&.src=ph&store=&prodid= &.done=http%3a//au.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s imon_t_hall/my_photos

Links to photos of the layout it measures 9m x (about) 3m in 5 separate pieces that slot together to create the complete loop. the The buildings in the town were hand made from Cardboard and the town is a representation of Wallerawang (near Lithgow)
Sadly now it gathers dust in the back of the shed and is taking up valuable room where the celica should be so I am trying to get rid of it.
