Keep up the good work.
I have been told that Clints RA28 was in really good condition, so you have a great starting point with this project.

Hope the 1U goes in, I thought about putting one in mine when the 1G died, but decided that it was too easy to chuck another one in and I needed the car back on the road.

As far as the conversion goes though, I can't really see why it would be that much harder than a 1G. The R&P conversion has been detailed before by Joel (TurboRA28), the diff is an easy thing to upgrade and teh rest will be the same.

Best of luck to you, keep us informed of the progress.

Anthony

A quick update...
Im working on getting the front suspension/brakes done atm.

Ill be using:
- LN106 Hilux 4 spot calipers
- RT132 Corona struts
- Pug 604 vented/slotted disks
- MS65 Crown Hubs (to give 5x114.3 wheel pattern)

Ill also be looking at getting Koni Yellow inserts in the struts, and adjustable camber tops.
Ill also investigate the cost of adj springs.

http://www.overclockers.com.au/~mwp/gallery/pic.php?pic=Car%20Work/Mine/Celica%20RA28%20New/2005-02-06%20Front%20Brakes/dscn4472.jpg&x=640&y=480&cache=1
The MS65 hubs.
They are mega rare and apparently worth ~$100ea now.
I was lucky to find them at all in Adelaide, and only paid $35ea for them Smile

The stock RT132 struts.

Hilux LN106 calipers i bought today for $150.

Great to see that you sourced the hubs. Where did you end up getting them from ? They are indeed getting harder to find !!

Would like to keep seeing the progress with this, as I reckon it will be a great car

Ive finally got the front brakes sorted!

http://www.overclockers.com.au/~mwp/gallery/pic.php?pic=Car%20Work/Mine/Celica%20RA28%20New/2005-03-09%20Front%20Brake%20Setup/dscn4612.jpg&x=640&y=480&cache=1

The rotors cost me a crap load more than i thought they would.
$300 for the slotted rotors, $75 to have them redrilled for the hubs, $40 to have them machined down to 266mm.
Oh well.

Koni yellow inserts have been ordered, and i should have them soon Smile
Now to buy some Noltec camber tops, 60mm ID springs & brake pads.

just a thought, because I have been looking into adjustable tops too
the RA28 ones form Noltec were quoted to me at $450...
but after some playing round the other day I found out that S13 ones will fit almost perfectly, just have to drill out 2 of the mounting holes, and they bolt right onto the end of the strut too !

A quick update...

And got my new Koni Yellow inserts and Koni "racing" bumpstops:
http://www.overclockers.com.au/~mwp/gallery/pic.php?pic=Car%20Work/Mine/Celica%20RA28%20New/2005-03-14%20Koni%20Yellow%20Inserts/dscn4652.jpg&x=800&y=600&cache=1

Slowly getting things done.
Working out what needs to be done and how to do it is taking most of the time.

There is no such thing as a height adjustable shock absorber!
If you think there is, you need to do more research.

They do make suspension kits, which include adj coilovers, but not for Toyota.

Go look for yourself:

MWP,
What inserts did you use ? I used RAV4 ones in my car.

Hickoz_bro,
The Koni adjustable shocks refer to the adjustable DAMPING rate, not height.

The standard length Koni model for the struts... 86-1991Sport.
Also fit Coronas, Celicas, Sprinter, etc.

Are you going to be lowering it much? As thought you might have wanted a shorter stroke shock?

bbaacchhyy do you have any length figures on the rav4 inserts?

Hehe Smile
Yup, quite close to what you did.
Only difference is im using the AE82 rack.

I measured the bumpsteer and ackerman angles of the stock setup.
Ill do the same measurements with the rack in.
Will be interesting to see the difference, hopefully there isnt much as engineering could then become difficult Sad

I'm debating trying the AE82 rack in my next R&P conversion. Means I wouldn't have to change the positioning of the control arm pivots.

How are you going with the ackerman angles? I found I couldn't get the rack forward enough to get it correct and had to be compromised.

Only way seemed to be totally hack into the xmember so the rack could be moved another 20mm forward or so.

Takai - yeah thats right. If you were looking from the top the inner tie rod ends on the rack are sitting infront of the outer tie rod ends.

But with the TA23 xmember custom rack job the best you can get is to have the steering arms straight. Could get longer steering knuckles but then you loose steering angle.

I'm debating trying the AE82 rack in my next R&P conversion. Means I wouldn't have to change the positioning of the control arm pivots.

Bumpsteer could still be a problem for me.

How are you going with the ackerman angles? I found I couldn't get the rack forward enough to get it correct and had to be compromised.

Yeh same here, im hoping it wont be a problem... mine is set back by around 10mm or so.
As you can see i cut some of the xmember flange away to get the rack as close as possible.
Ill find out what effect that 10mm has when i get it in the car and measure ackerman again.
Could extend the steering arms, but i know engineers frown on doing that Sad

Quote:

Only way seemed to be totally hack into the xmember so the rack could be moved another 20mm forward or so.

Or mount the rack vertically against the xmemeber.
Would need some spiffy custom mounts though to do it without going above or below the xmember.

Staying white.
No idea on the engine... when the steering and suspension is all sorted.

I find with the rack positioned back a bit and even though the ackerman angles are not perfect it feels fine on the road. Only really noticable downside is a poor turning circle.. hmmm 3 point turns...

But yeah on my next one i've done the same as you and cut the lip off the xmember, that'll give another 10mm closer like you say.

Did you end up with more or less ackerman Joel?
It looks like i might have more than stock.
Bumpsteer looks ok.
Ive got a tiny bit less travel for turning circle.

How many turns lock to lock for the AE86 rack?
AE82 is ~3.75 turns.

Almost ready to go in the car, just waiting on some new xmember bolts.

Same, 3.75 tltl. But you can get quick steer racks for the 86 which i dont think you can get for the 82.

Yeah with the ackerman on my 28, the inside wheen turns A LOT more than the outside wheel.

If the rack was pushed forward, it would straighten the inside wheel up a bit, and put more angle on the outside wheel.

I got a hold of an ae82 rack today and found it was slightly narrower than the celica control arm pivot points as apposed to the ke70 rack being too wide. Do you think this will be a problem? What affect could it have? Im still learning about rack and pinion setups but if its either too wide or too narrow could result in bump steer??

Yeh, it is narrower, not by much tho.

Look at the original steering box inner tie rods width... much narrower again.
I think the AE82 rack may still be too long.

Losing Ackerman isn't a major drama, sems to me the worst that happens is you get more tyre scrub and you lose some turning cirle....make U-turns more fun i reckon Smile

getting bumpsteer spot on is the biggy and mm's make a big difference here so pays to have an adjustable setup to get it right before you do the final welding. i spent 2 days pretty much, just on bumpsteer and we evetually got it pretty well perfect...much better than a stock GT4

Haha yeah U turns are interesting in the Celica.. 4000rpm and dropping clutch seems most effective Smile but no seriously.. its not all that bad. just notice some streets I used to be able to do a U turn in now are a 3point turn.

Yeah I can vouch for wanting to get bump steer correct. My first attempt had like 15mm of toe change across the suspension travel and it felt shocking as you can guess.

But I have the rack mounts sitting on blocks which you can change the thickness of to adjust the height of the rack.. I've got it pretty much right now and probably should look at replacing the alloy for some steel and weld it on and make it more permanent.

That was with the steering wheel straight?
Or while turned L or R a bit?

It looks like my setup has next to no bumpsteer while straight, but im not sure what its like while turned L or R.

Yeah that was with wheels straight ahead. Likewise I have next to none now.

Hey have you got any pics of the rack mounted on the xmember? Just interested to see your setup.

Cheers

Thats looking very good! So you have used ae82 brackets on both sides?

Also, I cant quite see.. but the alloy spacer you have on the driver side, does that continue right under the mount or is it just 2x blocks to space the brackets up?

Cheers
Joel

Yup, AE82 brackets on both sides.
The mounting on the rack on the drivers side had to be ground down due to the D shape being on the wrong side since it was orginally mounted on the firewall. Easy enough done though.

The alu spacer (12mm BTW) on the drivers side is under the whole mount.
It makes up the gap for the D shaped bracket.
It probably hard to see that it goes under all the way due to it narrowing in the middle to fit the rubber mount better.
I should have taken a photo of it Sad

I spent the afternoon comparing the original steering angles to the new R&P angles.

Bumpsteer looks very good.
At full travel up (at the bumpstop): r&p=-1.22° orig=+0.81°
At full travel down (fully extended): r&p=+2.94° orig=-2.23°
Not quite sure why the angles have been reversed, but it doesnt really matter as long as the angles havnt increased much.

Ackerman might be a problem though.
At a turning angle of 30° at the outside wheel, the difference in angle between the outside and inside wheels are: r&p=7.1° orig=4.1°

Longer steering arms would help reduce the ackerman angle, but would probably reduce turning circle which is already limited.
Ill try longer steering arms though if the engineer thinks 7.1° is too much.
Ill find out this week...

A quick update....

I saw the engineer today and gave him the R&P steering results.
He was quite impressed and said it would probably be ok, but since its easy to modfiy atm to try and get it better...

So ill try longer steering arms to reduce the ackerman and also try some different rack heights to reduce bump-steer.

He gave me the go for the chassis strengthening i have planned Smile

Looking good! How much did the noltec coilover bits cost, and have you got camber tops yet?

The technotoyotuning ones are MUCH cheaper than the noltec ones, and possibly better.
