half cut vs engine parts, and 2jz vs 1jz Fri, 25 October 2002 05:27 Go to next message
ok, I hooked up with a guy today who can supply me witha 2jz-GTE for $4500 (tho I'm sure I can talk him down a bit) .. thing is it's not a front cut, it's the engine, ecu, loom, intercooler, plumbing etc... with no gearbox. does that sound like a good price?
how easy would it be to do the install from this position, and how hard it it to get an r154 to bolt up? just need the bellhousing?

also, I *may* be able to get my hands on a vvti ijz-gte, for around $3500 for engine, ecu, intercooler, plumbing, gearbox .. which sounded like a good deal to me. anyone see problems?

I'm needing help here, because
1) jza70 front cuts are more expensive than I'd expected,
2) jza70 cuts are now almost 10 years old, so I might be looking for a newer vvti cut, or 2jz

and as an additional, anyone know how much a jz70 supra r154 gearbox would go for by itself? $650? (wild guess here)

If you can get a late-model 1JZ with gearbox for that price, jump on it now!! The 2JZ doesn't seem like a great deal, but JZ prices seem to be going through the roof lately so that might be the best you can do. Sad

Yes, an R154 will bolt up to a 2JZ block provided you have the 1JZ bellhousing. Typical prices for an R154 are $1500-2000 from my experience, and unfortunately 1JZ versions are usually at the higher end of the scale because they're less common.

$650 for an R154 is pretty unrealistic (maybe a W58?). The cheapest I've seen R154's go for is $1500, average $2000.

Here is a Tip: BUY A HALFCUT!!!! Unless you want to Build up from scratch.

For value for money, i really don't think you can go past the old TT 1J. You can pick up spare motors for chicken feed.... The dearest part of the whole deal is running the manual box. Autos are easy come by.

A half cut would be the way to go as you get all the fiddly things you find you need as the engine goes in - but it depends on how much mucking around you want to do....
The only place I've seen R154 gearboxes for a 1jz is Japanese Motorsport and they were $1750! (I bought a manual jza-70 half cut from there for $4,500 - expensive but it was very hard to get a manual) Otherwise I've heard W58 boxes from a 2jz NA will fit a 1jz but they are not as tough as the R154.

A W58 isn't a bad option, depending on which car you want to put it in. If the car originally came with a W58, it's a great idea because it slots right in!

yeah
2jz w58 would be very nice ... but then I've gotta buy the bellhousing, clutch etc to go with it.
I can grab a 1jz half cut for $3500 (which seems to be the going price), but a vvti 1jz would be ideal... all depends on what I can find I guess.

If I buy an auto front cut, how hard is it to stick a manual gearbox to it?

You'll need to buy all the parts, the flywheel, gearbox, clutch and stuff. Probably easiest just to get a manual 1J in the first place.

You got your flywheel yet Norbie?

No, still hasn't arrived. Sad GT said he was going to send it on Friday, so hopefully it will show up some time next week!

I wouldn't recommend converting an auto 1JZ/2JZ to manual if you can avoid it. I'm in the middle of doing exactly that and it's a PITA. I still don't know if the factory computer is going to work when it's done...

Isn't there supposed to be a way to trick the factory computer into thinking that its still there. I know I was wondering about this when I was researching the 1UZFE and this is what I had been told.

I looked around at 1JZ halfcut prices and decided to just buy the bits seperately. If your smart and willing to hang around for good prices, I think it MIGHT be cheaper (not easier) to get the bits piece by piece.

Ive seen a few R154's go for $1200-1500 and W58's go even cheaper of course. I got my 1JZ with wiring for $900...Im hoping to do it all for around $3000 (not incl custom flywheel and aftermarket clutch...which I would want anyway)

Re auto ECU on manual box,

I have it from a few ppl that the auto ECU works fine on a manual box with the 1JZ (I just bought an auto ECU with this in mind), Id guess it might be the same on a 2JZ
