Question about the 5M-E ECU. Sat, 29 January 2005 02:02 Go to next message
Hey All,

On the side of the old ECU's (in my case 5M-E) there are 2 screw holes with gum covered over it, does anyone know what the 2 adjustments do for the ECU?

Cheers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/CelicaSupra/DSC00806.jpg

on the right side of the ECU (seen as a thingy attached to the side wall of the ECU), there is 2 small holes gummed up with silicon/putty where you can put a small phillips head screw driver and adjust something...

Does any have a clue what it does?

Cheers.

Those screws are not for adjustment, they are clamping an output transistor (injectors most likely) to the casing for heat dissapation.

From what I can see on that board, there is no adjustability.

EDIT: Plz take a side shot, just so I can confirm.

yep, as said above, it is used to clamp the driving FET to the case to cool it Smile

i wouldn't bother keeping open your ECU and photgraphing it - there is nothing adjustable. zip. nadda.

No problems Embarassed

Does anyone know if the USA grade of petrol is similar to Australia or that they are different by a bit... Using the USA ECU the 5M-E runs laggy and slow.

Cheers.

i thought "slow and laggy" was a factory-built feature of the engine? Laughing

you could try to increase the static ignition advance as well (and disconnect any emissions-control vacuum-advance control)... i did this without major harm to the engine - so the only vacuum line to the dizzi is from the plenum.

USA runs similar petrol to us - i can't see this being an issue?

I am running 16D TDC because of the premium unleaded... It runs great with the Aussie ECU in it but when I just plug in the USA ECU, it goes like crap and when you push it. It lags big time. I just have to wake up tomorrow early and try again...

Cheers.

Oh and I forgot... Remember that it's (very) inefficient Laughing

i was under the impression that the USA ECU had worse tuning than ours.
the info i have seen points towards their 5ME's having even less power ( thats right, there is such a thing Razz ) than ours. . .
can anyone confirm this??

I thought it was based on the quality of the fuel... Tomorrow I am going to retard the timing back to 8D TDC (on premium) and see how it will drive... Would it be detrimental to my motor if I do that?

Cheers.

mine runs much higher - around 15 degrees BTDC at idle i think.

there's not much rotation left on the clamp on the side of the dizzi.

you'll improve things slightly (at the expence of harder cold starting and increased risk of pining/detonation) if you up the timing advance, not retard it.

If you have a 5M-E Remember to disconnect the 2 vaccum pipes and plug them up when you are tuning the car...

I'll retard to 8D BTDC the car tomorrow...

Cheers.
