MECHANICS

Ok, i've decided to bite the bullet and go to the mechanics to fix my long-going problem. It's just been too unbearable to live with now.
Anyway, just want to let you's know one last time JUST IN CASE someone comes up with another suggestion or solution before i take it to the mech's.
The problem is that the car 'chokes' at any given time, when it's cold or even when it's hot, during any gear and rev range. The throttle doesn't rev above 2k rpm, and boost/vacuum gauge reads 0. Car feels like it's running out of petrol. I've done a diagnostics on it, and it came up 41 & 51, which is related to the Throttle position sensor, Accelerator Cable, & A/C devices.
Can anyone tell me a reputable mechanic in Melbourne to take my sw20 too? Man i know i'm gonna be stung hard for this.
Thanks all

have you replaced the TPS?
have you checked that the vacuum line for the MAP sensor (your model has one) is connected?
sounds like it's running on little else but idle settings ... ECU gets info about requierd fuel use from three main sensors: TPS, MAP (or AFM) and RPM - it will adjust (compensate) fuel requirements based on Air and Coolant temps.
Before you commit to a few hours of labour - re-check (or even loan a replacement) the TPS, ensure you are getting rpm (you should have no spark or the timing will failsafe to 10 degree BTDC) if ECU is not getting Rpm signal (as it works out the advance) MAP should come up with error (engine revs but MAP is still at ambient pressure)

I'm running on an AFM engine. I have the TPS on order, it's on it's way down here. How would i check the TPS? I wouldn't have the slightest clue on how to make sure it's working correctly etc.
What do you mean by the spark?
Sorry i'm very mechanically illiterate.

TPS can be checked with a multimeter- you should try to get hold of/borrow the TSRM (toyota service repair manual) for your engine - it will have a number of testing methods
in a nutshell, if it's a variable resistance TPS you measure the resistance between centre and an outer pin (3 pins on plug?) and the resistance should vary as you move the throttle. one pin might be a WoT signal that only closes at near WOT.
if it's a switch, (usually 4 wires) various contacts will open/close as the throttle moves from closed to WoT -manual is needed to refer to switch behaviour

beg/borrow a timing light (it will have power plugs + & - 12V and a clamp-thing to clamp around the #1 plug lead
read instructions that come with light (it basically flashes a strobe light when it senses a spark plug firing)
locate on front engine pulley and timing cover the timing marks
when you rev the engine, the timing will change (as shown up by the timing light) - unless the igniter is in limp home mode (it will stay at 10 degrees)
