Options for my SW20 MR2 Sun, 30 January 2005 04:33 Go to next message
Hey guys, bought myself an SW20 3S-GTE MR2 a few months ago, right now im looking to give it a few mods to up that horsepower a bit, just wanted some advice on what i should do next ect.

Current Setup:

3S-GTE, Stock Turbo, Stock Intercooler (Side Mounts)
Blow Off Valve
3" Exhaust Turbo Back

Few more mods but nothing to do with performance.

The car is also running rich so i think a SAFC would fix that yeh?

boost controller
bigger intercooler
pod filter or in box filter replacement
irridium spark plugs
super afc if you must but why not get a piggy back ecu whats a saf-c worth $800 ?

aftermarket ecu wont be too much more and give scope for future mods.

Just my 2 cents

Don't use a SAFC. They work by reducing the signal from the main load sensor, in your case most likely the AFM. When the engine is under load it requires less fuel which is the aim of the SAFC. The problem is that when the engine is under less load it will handle more ignition advance so this also happens when using an SAFC to lean out an engine.

This = detonation = dead number 3 piston. The 3S doesn't take kindly to this kind of treatment.

Tell me about it, thats exactly what happened to my car. Except i was using an F-Con fuel controller.

headgasket blew out on #3 piston. Probably due to pinging.

Advice, wanna adjust the fuel, get a aftermarket ecu. You will be better off.

As for mods, whats been said already, thats fine.

Any idea on where i can get an aftermarket ECU then or what to look for?

As for the boost controller wouldnt i need a bigger intercooler before i can start adjusting boost?

Also what are my options for an intercooler, is putting a front mount in possible?

cheapest route would be a MTX8 or something second hand off the forums, and get it fitted up and tuned by a pro. Unless you can do the fitting yourself.

A Larger intercooler isn't required, but a good idea, since the small intercooler in the enginebay would heatsoak. A larger more efficient intercooler in the same stop would do the trick nicely. Or if you can find a WTA intercooler from a GT-Four then you would have a nicer setup. FMIC isn't an option.

Your turbo won't be much good past 1Bar, so maybe a highflow would be required. or a 'CT20B' would see a nice increase in power.

Fueling will need to be looked at to.

Depends on how deep your pockets are.

First Mod:

Return to factory plumb back BOV!
Atleast until you get ride of the MAF with an after market ECU.

I'm assuming here your after market BOV is open and makes that desirable Wooosh sound, but they also release air that the original ECU assumes is entering the engine as it has already passed the MAF. causing the original ECU to run rich when you back off, wasting fuel, carbonising your engines interinal and washing the oil film of the cyclinder walls, I.e. not cool!

disregard my ranting if you're lucky enough to have an MAP sensored 3SGTE or a sequential combination open and plumb back BOV.
