It seems as though this conversion would be quite simple to perform using a 22 spline gearbox and diff... Why are there little or no 4AGE celica's around???

Because a 1g is equally easy, and buckets more fun.

A 2T-GEU is cheaper, easier and 95% as good as a 4A-GE. Good 2T-GEU's are getting harder to find so 4A-GE conversions may become more popular, but it's still a lot of effort compared to the results (ie a 4A-GE in a TA22 isn't exactly a rocketship).

in a mechanical point of view, What has to be altered/changed???
What gearbox to use?
What gearbox and engine mounts to use?
What crossmember to use?
What diff to use?
What tailshaft to use?

A) Get and RA23, they fit easier.
You need a W58 gearbox instead of a W50
The standard gearbox mount fits with a little modification (there's about a hundred docos out there on how to do it)
The cross member mounts don't need to be changed, you just need to make sure you get the right engine side mounts
You can use the standard tailshaft and diff, they all fit.
(until you break them like I do, but you have to be extreme).

True,
But let's face it, no engine conversion is cheap.
But a mate of mine did the 1g-gte conversion into an RA23, AND got it engineered for a quick reasonable price.

4A-GZE will go "alright", but not great. 1G-GTE will go in with the same amount of effort and will perform much better.
TA22: approx 950kg
RA23/28: approx 1080kg

if you like corners a 4agze would be better and good condition ones can make upwards of 200kw atw on standard internals.
