yeah interesting one...
i reckon it would need to be permanantly modified,
you wouldnt be able to use a loose spacer in case
it fell out, not that you would be doing that lol
and it probably would also have to accept standard
brake pads for the caliper, so modifying the pad -
having a spacer attached wouldnt be allowed.
the caliper would have to be modified to
suit everthing else.
hang on <goes to look for qld engineers manual>

Looking for a general yes / no before further investigation.
Thanks.

That 4mm per side and starting to stretch it a bit. I doubt and engineer would pass it if they knew about it.
Can't you get a bnetter disc to suit and do it properly ?

Depending on the caliper you are using its easy.
Take the RX7 calipers for example. All you have to do is trace out the pad backing plate on some 4mm steel plate, drill some holes in it and fit it like a standard pad. Simple and has been done a billion times.
But as I said it depends on the caliper.

What about piston travel issue's...
by adding the spacer your effectively asking the piston to travel a distance further than original, correct?
Im not sure on distance the piston travels *scratches chin*

No. By adding the spacer, your making the piston travel the same as it would when using the standard rotor. Think about it.

that's total travel of piston not travel used in a normal braking event
hydraulic piston in brakes will only retract to point where pads are not forced against disc

What rotor are you using?
There is usually a vented version of your solid disc.
Plus, your solid disc is gonna heat up VERY quickly with 4spot brakes when you stand on it.
Get a better disc.

heating would be my biggest concern a 12mm disc is tiny. any half 4spot caliper will cook it in no time. surely you can find a better rotor. even if it is too larger diameter wise and get it milled down ?

T'was just a theorectical - gotta learn somehow.
I am actually using a 20mm vented and slotted disc
Thanks for the help !

cool 1 is dead correct with this. The engineer didn't even bat an eyelid at the spacers on mine. I would rather a spacer pad than to have the pistons pop out when the brake pad is worn.
I did mine with pieces of 3mm mild steel sheet (1 each side) for my HiLux 4 spotters (using 22mm disc instead of the 28mm rotors) and as stated above I copied the anti-squeal plate and made them complete with tabs that assist with the location on the back of the pad.

a secure spacer seems like the easiest and
simplest mod to make it all work...
see what anyone else has to say?

I made these "shims" to try out a 22mm disc in a Z32 front caliper.
