Engine, GearBox and Diff on a 81 hilux 2wd Tue, 01 February 2005 02:26 Go to next message
Did a search and so everone reckons 18RG is the best engine
what about the gearbox does the it bolt up for both engine's?
don't mind changing the gearbox over, if anyone has any idea's on a good engine AND gearbox swap would be nice
and want to change the diff to something newer any idea there

now i can fab up some engine mounts , done that before
and wireing is a breeze same with setting up a electric pump

just as a note i do live in western Australia so a V8 is a nice idea BUT i don't really think MR plod would be impressed, not that i blame him either now i could get a engineer report , i don't want to have to, simply because if it's not a FORD V8 or Holden V8 most engineers won't go near it thats this crap town for ya Wink

so good 4 Engine Gearbox and Diff

Just drive down to Perth and get it engineered.

Any engineer who wants your money will pass it providing its safe.

I'm in the process of getting my Toyota V8 engineered.

Just make sure you fill out the paper work before you begin anything.

If you put anything in thats got 25% more capacitiy, or 25% more power, you will need it engineered.

A 22RE is about all you will legally be able to fit - That won't require engineering.
Even then, the EFI conversion may require engineering.

http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing/forms/modform_p rodveh.pdf

Fill it out, send it off.

Ok really getting it looked at isn't much of a problem, just have to find the right guy

Just want to upgrade the engine gearbox
a good 4 cycled or maybe a V6 (not sure)

replace the rear axle something with disk brakes and can get ratio's for easy

now not looking for a speed machine maybe a S/C later
just something good to cruze to work in something alittle different

really needs to be ULP engine not worry'd if it's carby or EFI

hope that clears things up

u can pretty easily change it to a holden v8 or v6, a few places sell conversion kits, after my engiene froze i looked around and ive settled on this option cos im stripping the ute anyways, think ill go with the holden 3800, maybe the v8 but i want to drive the thing on a budget.
i tried looking around locally for a 18RG varient, no luck, no one wanted to sell a 18RC cos thier old as sept one place that wanted 500 for a non reco POS.
theres heaps of options

Hi,

A Mate of mine is doing an 83 Hilux 2WD conversion at the moment. He's had a hard time getting a good 18RG, though - YES cause they're OLD.
Yeah, the hard part is getting an 18RG in good condition.
Were you going to use carbs or EFI?
The carbs need to be on and 88250 manifold as they were shorter than the 88210 manifolds - This IS important as you can fit the carbs past the brake booster on the old hilux if you use anything else - I don't know for sure, but you may be OK with EFI gear??
As for the gearbox and Diff - They used them in the celica's when they put 18RG's in them cause they're tough.

Did you think you need an engineers report for the 18RG conversion.
According to people here in SA - you can probably get away with it because your hilux had and 18R in it to begin with. Well when you change the engine number it is STILL an 18 R - but just one with a better head on it!!

Oh, just use your engine mounts off your 18R - they should bolt straight onto an 18RG

Good luck.

Be careful swapping gearboxes in a Hi lux, as although they might look the same as the Celica W series, same are actually shorter in the input shaft and bellhousing. The Dellow website has lots of explanations if you can find it, have seen many early hi luxes with V6 and V8 conversions, there are plenty of adaptors out there. First question is is yours a 12r or 18r hi lux because it changes some choices.

18rg is definetly the easiest conversion for you, motors are out there and almost a bolt in swap and driveline can stay standard.

didn't have to be simple, just don't have explain why i difiled a Toyota with a push rod engine
and i don't mind playing with different gearbox's and bell houseings to get it to fit either, the wonder's of have a full metal fab workshop to use on weekends
now does anyone have any problems with a 4GAZE and what would be the best matching gear box now that engine is a 16 valve supercharger'd engine isn't it?

wanted something new with EFI 1.8L-2.4L in size

That opens up a whole new world where basically anything is possible. From what I am seeing and reading I would probably look at a later V6 with EFI or a 1ggte. Think you would find the 4agze a bit small being a 1600 cc supercharged motor, would of thought an ecotech holden supercharged 3.8 better.
Lucky to have full metal shop means almost anything is possible.
