HKS Super AFR vs APEXi Super AFC Sat, 26 October 2002 13:28 Go to next message
I'm don't think I've heard anyone use a HKS super AFR on this forum but it essentially performs the same role as the apexi safc.

Here is a link to the HKS item:

http://www.hksusa.com/products/?id=811

Has anyone got experience with this, can you give any feedback?

It says on the site that it offers 11 incremental settings of adjustment and + or - 50% fuel. I was told the Apexi item only offers 8 points of adjustment.

If this was the case the HKS AFR should offer better tuning capacity, right?

Other than that it doesn't have the cool display and doesn't look as sweet, but I may be able to get one for arround the $300 mark.

What do you think?

Oh yeah, this is for use on a 1jz

The description doesn't mention if it has a high/low thhrottle setting. With the S-AFC, you can have two different maps for high throttle (open loop) and low throttle (closed loop - but the toyota computer will probably adjust back to factory according to the O2 sensor) = 16 points.

The HKS model is more subtle and the S-AFC is more ricey/big computer display/theft risk.

Is there a big cost difference?

I downloaded the manual of the HKS one(I can email a copy to anyone if they want, acrobat format).

And it has a lot of information. It has a seperate adjustment for idle control between 650rpm and 1500rpm which are independent of the 11 incremental settings between 650rpm and 8000rpm.

it also has a bit about response adjustment which enables changes of the engines initial throttle response between 650 and 5000rpm. It doesn't actually state this as closed loop but thats what it sounds like to me.

Anyone else have an opinion/more info as I have 2 days to decide whether to buy this or not?

Seems like at the price, unless you can get a S-AFC for less than the $700 retail, it seems the goods. HKS don't muck around I guess - it must work OK.

well I can get the HKS item for around $310. This seems like a pretty good deal, i can probably sell it for more if I don't like it. Smile

There is also an APEXi SAFC for sale that I know of for $480. If it doesn't sell in the next week I may be able to talk him down.

I'm not sure which way to go, but I think they will both do the same job, installation looks pretty simple on both, the only plus I can see to the Apexi one is the sweet display.

What would you guys do in my position.

I got the S-AFC, but only for aesthetic reasons. If that was the price difference, I might take the HKS. The Apexi however has other gauge features like RPM / boost (off factory MAP sensor) and throttle position - that is if you need to display these things.

Crisis over. The HKS SAFR has jumped to $460 which is only $20 cheaper than the Apexi SAFC.

As I know first hand that the Apexi does what I want (and looks cool too Very Happy ) I will buy it.

Thanks for you help though Cool
