Well, as Rubies of eventide (I've been hooked for a couple of days...) server is down, I may as well share this with you.

It was at the tractor pull on the weekend at Wakefield.

I talked a bit to the owner, he said it is the NA version of the Merlin engine (it's not called merlin) that was in a tank in WWII. He attached a couple of snails and lightened/balenced the bottom end (to add 1000 RPM making the redline - wait for it - 3600RPM!!). It's 27 litres, and he said that it was estimated to be making 2000HP on 20PSI before the injection (I assume it ran carbs) but now with better tuning, he's hoping to get 30PSI into it and make close to 3000HP.

I got some pics. I wish I had more. I always get home from something and say, Why didn't I take more pics of this?!

Also of note was the vast array of tractors which had more than 1 engine, including one running 2 13B's (no turbo's or ecu's in sight, unfortunately).

Twin 13B's

I think there should be some sort of law, disallowing this many engines powering one vehical without a turbo...
 http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~cooltim/DSCF0035.jpg

Turbo conversions don't get much simpler. The oil was tapped on the top of the oil pump, fed into the top of the turbo, and dripped straight into the rocker cover...

And here's one doing it's thing...

Disclamer: In no way do the photo's or information contained within this post mean I actually went to the tractor pull. I meerly, er, guessed.

When it comes time to plough it would be done pretty damn quick!

Tim, I hope you wore an old set of farm overalls and chewed some straw the whole time you weren't at the event to fit in with them yall!

Did they have a banjo duel at the lunch time break Laughing

I love the first pic, the boots, the shorts, the shirts and the hats, and a laptop running MoTeC fully programmable ECU tuning software in the same photo...

goes to show you can't judge a man by his threads...

When I saw the ads for this event I thought it looked very Yank, but obviously these events must be pretty big here or why would these guys bother building such elaborate machines.

Apparently there are 6 or 7 "pulls" (I wasn't there honest!) a year. Everything is completely custom and is only used for the events. Like, none of the tractors are actually useful for anything other than pulling a large weight down a dirt track. I bet there's some money in em too.

Yeah right, you probably got yourself a Gold Season Pass which entitles you to attend a season of tractor pulls, one ride in a John Deere, a complimentary worn out Acubra and a cob of corn to chew on while you watch the pulls Laughing

a supercharged, methanol injected chev 400 v8 makes a damn cool sound, im going to try to go to the quambatook tractor pull this easter, cause it is so cool.

oh yeah, i saw the "rotary hoe" once before, but at the time it had a 12A and a 13B with their eccentric shafts welded together. sounded shit, but it pulled ok

HELL YEAH~!

That shit TOTALLY floats my boat - and yes, I was brought up on a farm. Razz

I gots'ta get me to on of them there traktorr pullz reeel soon-like. I can't get enough of the "it works, why would you want to change/tidy/clean it?" engineering attitude ! ! !

[Hijack:]

If I could be anywhere, anytime, I'd be an F1 engineer in the late 60's / 70's. SO MUCH making a car design up off the top of people's heads, then banging one up in 5-6 weeks. Then racing it after one or two shakedown/test sessions. GOLD!

As an example, March Engineering started in November 1969 with plans to run two cars for itself. At the start of December they had a shed and a telephone, as well as an extra order - to build a car for Ken Tyrrell (to be driven by one Jackie Stewart). . . EEEK!

9 weeks later they had cars up and running around silverstone in front of the press, and at the first GP at the start of the season they produced 5 cars on the grid, One on POLE, another beside it on the front row of the grid!

This was their FIRST EVER GP ! !

Nice Oil-Can placement eh?

http://www.carclassic.com/images4/DH69/DH69-07.jpg
Yup, that grey tubing running beside the cockpit IS the coolant line to the radiator!

Of course, it's a different story nowadays - How many Races have B.A.R. won, after saying they'd win races & get poles in their 1st year? ? ? ? Rolling Eyes

Perhaps McLaren might win a bit more often, if they spent less effort impressing sponsers, and actually got-on with the task of building quick race cars . . . . .

p.s. - Cut Downforce on current GP cars by 70% and bring back HUGE slicks. Who's with me?!?!
