Oil Temperatures

Guys I was looking at installing an oil cooler for someone the other day but the room available was few and far between except for behind the radiator where it would become an oil warmer very quickly
But I though about running a independant fan full time on the cooler but this has popped a question in to my head to which I cant find an answer, maybe John K or Bill can answer it for me.
for those running a 4AGE or 3SGE with an oil cooler what is the average temp of your oil? has anyone measured the difference in temp with and without the cooler attached? the reason I need an answer is that if I run a fan full time Im worried the oil temp will get so low as to damage the piston with the heat difference when it comes out the squirters as well as affecting engine wear.
anybody got some answers?

hmm thats a fair bit of cooling , where do you have it mounted exactly? does it get a constant flow of cold air? and what about when youre really pushing the car like at a track, what sort of temps do you get then?

Oil temperature about the same as engine coolant temperature is good.
Don't worry about oil squirters shock cooling the pistons unless you plan on running a large esky with heaps of ice as a cooler.

Blown86, why shouldnt I worry about cold oil hitting a hot piston? 4AGE pistons are pretty thin, if I get the cooled oil temp down to 50-60c then thats a large difference from 110c and could IMHO crack a piston running at extremes. Have you done some testing in this area? Id like to know more if you have

Use a water-to-oil intercooler, then the oil will never run too hot or cold. It'll also warm up faster.
Something like the gadget on the side of the gen 3 & later 3SGE's are good.

Got a fair understanding of thermodynamics and metallurgy from my studies as a mechanical engineer.
If you use an overly large oil cooler you MUST use a thermostat.
It is not good for the whole engine to run with oil cooled too low. About engine operating temperature is the best temperature.
The oil squirters spray at the bottom of the piston crown to keep the crown cooler. Imagine what happens if you start the engine from cold on a cold day. The piston crown within seconds will reach a temperature of around 400C plus but the oil will take minutes to reach operating temperature. The oil is still sprayed at the bottom of the crown. No damage results.
The volume of oil at any given instant is not enough to quench the piston to the point of piston failure. Once the oil has reached operating temperature, ideally the system is in a degree of equilibrium ie: heat removed from the crown = heat absorbed by the piston crown for given revs.
I've got a water/oil cooler, much less hassle. Oil temperature is regulated by coolant temperature and as Bill said it warms up faster. Used a cooler off a 2.2 turbo Mazda donk and remote mounted it.

so basically any auto transmission radiator with the oil cooler at the bottom for the trans fluid would do the trick, in the case of a 4AGE that would mean the oil would be stabilising around 86 or so degrees C , which is probhably cool enough to keep internal temps down so long as you didnt overheat and then the oil would be heating quicker as well with the water boiling which would not be a good look
Bill have you got a pick of one of those gen 3 coolers?

I don't have a pic, sorry, but all they are is a small cylinder a little bigger diameter than an oil filter and about 40mm thick. There's two pipes coming out of it, one for water in & the other for water out. Check around and you should be able to find one. The only hassle with using one is that you'll have to use a remote filter.

Sorry to come back to such an old topic, but would it be okay to use a large oil cooler like an rx7 or rx3 style oil cooler that mounts below the radiator?

Is it also possible to install oil squirters in a big port red & black top motor?
I was going to upgrade to the 100kW pistons, I thought it might be good to somehow install oil squirters if the block has the machining done.
