Getting mech work done by TAFE? Wed, 02 February 2005 06:14 Go to next message
Hey guys,

I have read how it is possible to take your car to a TAFE and get a respray done by the students, and the labour costs nothing (or at least very little) and you just pay for the paint. I figure they do this in return for volunteering your car to them since it kinda does them a favor as well.

This is just a thought, but I was wondering if they do a similar thing for mechanical work, eg engine swaps, rebuilds etc? I imagine they would also need people to volunteer their cars for this type of hands on work as well. I suppose there is some sort of risk you'd have to be prepared to accept as an owner (they are learning, after all), but is the work done to a reasonable standard? I guess the supervisor/instructor would check to make sure everything is done properly. Or do TAFE just have their own cars?

If there is anyone here actually doing a vehicle mechanics related course at a TAFE (especially in QLD) I'd be interested to hear an insider's view of what happens in regard to this. Thanks!

Cheers,
Matt

I heard that in this situation you have to supply the consumables/materials and they do the labour for free, tho I dont know anyone thats doing it, just what I have heard.

this is NOT the case, well not at the tafe i went to for the last three years (campbelltown).

i too wanted my car resprayed, but for some reason they wont do it, they will do their own cars but they wouldnt do other peoples cars. a teacher got his car done but this was rare apparently. the college actually BUYS wrecks to panel beat/respray but the wont do other tafe student cars.

Hm, maybe it varies from one tafe to the next - some will do it, others won't. If they won't maybe it's because they would rather work on wrecks because it doesn't matter if they stuff it up, as opposed to trying to keep an owner happy.

A guy in WA on the old celica.net forums (before it imploded) definitely had his car sprayed at a tafe, but I think he knew someone who worked there or something.

I guess the best bet would be to contact my local tafe (there one about 2 mins from my house) and ask nicely!

Anyone else got any insider info?

Matt

finished a coupla months ago. im a mech, and i could bring my own car in, anyones car in i like and work on it, regas the air etc. but even tho i got along alright with the teacher, he said a respray was a no go. another teacher had a car resprayed and i thought it was a pretty good job so i offered my car and they refused as mentioned. i dont know if other tafes are doing it on the sly but according to my teacher (head teacher) he said they arent allowed to do it.

matt, my mate's dad is a mech tafe teacher and he got his dad to arrange for his car to be resprayed. he brought the paint etc and they did the labour free. the car was a VK commodore and it turned out really well.
This is in melb btw, so dont know if it will be really different elsewhere...
