im trying to screw a few more hp out of the 2T, can anyone recomend a good primary ignition advance setting? im on about 15 before at the moment and was thinking of going to 20 or 25 BTDC. will the motor ping and die before i get out of the driveway? the vacuum advance im pretty sure isnt working.
specs are: 2T (OHV) solex downdraught carb, K&N air filter, 272 degree cam, pacemakers and a 2" straight through. i run BP Ultimate all the time.
also, some air/fuel settings. besides overheating, poor idle etc, what are the symptoms of a too lean mixture?

Hey,
Yeah I too would like a bit more info on this. I am running 15 degrees as well, and was wondering how far to go before it screws things up.
I tested the vacuum advance on mine with one of those little testers and its still working nicely (surprisingly)
There is a place up the coast here (qld) that does replacement vacuum advance pieces. If you are interested I can dig up there details.

advance = suck it and see (best done on a dyno)
A/F - if it is too lean the car will cough and pop out of the exhaust )one of the symptoms).

i leaned it out about a full turn on the mixture screw, then adjusted the idle back to normal.
the idle speed moves around a bit, ie. from 800rpm-1200rpm but it seems to be a bit more responsive, but that could just be in my head.
YelloRolla, i presume you mean popping under load is a symptom, it pops and backfires on the over-run (backing off) all the time, but nothing abnormal, just due to the overlap on the cam i thought. never hesitates under WOT, but has a few little misses at part throttle low revs.
i'll play with the advance tomorrow, mabe start at 20 degrees. i dont have the means to access to a dyno unfortunately.

popping on overrun may be caused by a couple of different issues, one of them being lean, but who cares if it is lean on the overrun?.
But yes primarily if it popped under normal load or high load then that is very bad.

fwiw, i have tried advance between about 15 and 35 base advance... basically, you will find a point beyond which power will drop off and the motor will make more noise but less go. past that you may ping, but mine doesn't tend to.. just loses power.
you will probably find that different base advance will be better at diferent rev ranges. just try by advancing maybe 2deg at a time and go for a drive..

Hi
Sorry to steal the thread but was wondering what advance people have found best for a 2TG i know 16 degrees is the factory setting for my engine but was wondering how far can i advance it to gain a little more out of it. Just a ball park figure would do
Thanks

blank off the vacuum advance and run it at 24-30 depending on cam. vacumm advance isn't necessary and may cause it to over-advance and send a leg out of bed.
