Removing Carbon build up Thu, 03 February 2005 06:38 Go to next message
Does anyone know of a product that can, for example, clean carbon deposits off piston crowns and other surfaces while they are still in the car??

Im assuming you have to take the head off to gain access, but is it a process of physically removing the carbon (im weary of using a scraper) or is there a solvent you can purchase to remove it without scoring the crown surface.

I can only wish there is something you can say squirt in the spark plug hole and it eats it all away then just crank the motor to flush it out and your done...hehe Rolling Eyes

So, any ideas or experiences that may help me would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard of someone spraying small amounts of water in the intake (N/A carbie car). Don't know if I would do it myself. Interested to know what others think of using water and if it would have any bad effects.

Water works well but it cannot be compressed so be careful. In the past I have used an $1 atomisation bottle and squirted the water in with the throttle held open.

I have used that exact method with an EFI car by simply removing the rubber induction hose from the T/B an voila.

i don't understand this near obsession with cleaning "carbon deposits" from pistons.
are there symptoms or problems that it is causing, and that will be cured by its removal??

other then a higher compression ratio, AND MAYBE engine run-on/pre-ignition/dieseling.

if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

near obsession??? the reasoning behind it, and quite possibly your apparent lack of understanding on the issue is that US spec cars run on shit fuels and are tuned down to compensate for the causes of preignition...

Aus and JAP spec motors are tuned with performance and emmission standards in mind, and are tuned to the brink of preignition, but because we run better fuels carbon buildups are minimal at best so it hardly ever becomes an issue.

But for whatever cause if you get excessive carbon build ups in our engines it makes our engines ping to the shithouse...

I havent hit boost in a couple weeks because of this....so obsession?!? id research the issue and get some facts before you start asking stupid questions, and spurting out cliches

Removing carbon build up can be a good idea in theory, however, in older engines (100,000km+) you may find that if you clean out the carbon your rings will be loose and your compression may go down considerably.

I suppose in a way this will minimise detonation but it could also decrease power output.

Over in Europe we have a very good product that is manufactured by a company called BG. They have a few different cans but one i've used to called 44K. Its absolutly brilliant. Our emmisions are much tougher then yours and this really improves them. Now the bad news. Its forced into the throttle body in a mist by a special Bottle that you hook an airline to. So its a professional application. Its cleans right down to the rings as far as I know. I reckon that it retails at about 190 dollars done professionally. I'll try and find a link for you. Its really good stuff though.
