Bye Bye Commadore....

Well to cut a long story short, my parents own/owned a 94 VR commadore in which last tuesday 22nd i had an accident in. Thank god for insurance (never thought i would say that) i am/was named as a driver in the comprehensive insureance. I was traveling along a street in nambucca (my town of residence), hilly street at that and at the top there is a right hander with a hump.. anyway i am coming up the hill hit the hump my wet shoes slid on the floor mat, given the V6 a gut full and due to shitty suspension and tires, had me pulling fishys up the road... all was good until a telegraph pole decided to jump in the way...
The cops came.. blah blah... so did the fire brigade, and the ambos and the SES.
I went back the next day to tack a look at the pole... holy shit... the thing has huge cracks all the way to the top and has moved around 1/2 metre in the ground...
Some how i managed to walk away from it with a few cuts on my knees. The coppers were going to charge me with neg driving but decided to drop that and give me a speeding infringement (i was doing 60 in a 50 zone)
Story aside the real reason for this post is some ideas on a car to buy... the insureance is paying around the 14 mark but we will have around 20 to spend on a car. it will have to be second hand.. obviously. It needs to be sort of familyish.. four doors.. etc.. so what do you guys reckon???

Holy Crap!!! I think that's even worse than mine...
How are you dude??? Knees okay??? You're bloody lucky to come out okay... In my stack, I broke both the bones in the front of the skull, had a huge lash to the forehead, stuffed both shoulders and twisted my spine (Which still isn't better)...
It should not have happened to any car for the record Shane...

Go a VT commodore, they're going for about $20,000 now that the new VY is out.
I got run off a gravel road by another car in my mum's VP, a dirt bank is a lot more forgiving than a pole.

Sounded like fun until you hit the pole.
You could buy my car.....
Nah, then I wouldn't have one. Another common should do well, unless you want something butt-ugly and that breaks down all the time, then follow shane's advice.... Sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity to slag a ford.

Slagging a Ford is good...
I'd also have to say to get another Commodore... How fast were you going when you came into contact with the pole??? Were you still going 60km/h??? Cause by the looks of it, the car did pretty good for 60km/h straight into a pole...

Yeah, i am very luck to have walked away from it. The ambo said that if it didnt have an airbag he didnt like my chances of surviving the crash.
When i went to get out of the car i couldnt move my legs..and that was when i began to panic, thank god i could open the door (if you take a look at the pic you can see on the passenger side the roof has a big kink in it, both those doors no longer open) once i had the door open all i could do was lean and fall out of the car, then i stumbled to my feet and limped to the grass near the pole. It wasnt till the next day that my body started aching etc.. but other than that i am fine... the doc desided that my knees didnt need stiches.. altho he said they probably could have done with some.
They also had to take a blood test for grog and drugs.. etc..
Thanks for the concern guys. i reckon another commadore would go alright. i dont mind the new camry's... what do youse rteckon bout them?

im sorry to hear that you trashed the car, but im glad to hear you are ok
OK, if you are looking at a nice comfy family car in the $20k mark, and dont mind FWD, then check this out.
WE used to own a 1996 Nissan Maxima. I know they dont look like the most inspiring car, but a falcodorre aint better by ANY mark. These cars go for less than $20k.. and if your lucky you might be able to pick up a VERY nice and luxurious top model for around $20k!!
these babies are FWD i will admit, but they do have a very tidy 150kW or so... and do go faster than commondoors. They have all the luxury and funky features like climate control air, CD player, 6 spkr stereo, velour interior (leather on luxury model), ABS, airbags, factory mags, and plenty of other features. They are very neat, and won't fall apart like commodores and falcons do after 3 years. We had ours for 4 years and sold it for around $17k.. in absolutley PERFECT condition.... it would've been an ABSOLUTE steal.
i recommend these VERY HIGHLY! especially in comparison to a commo or coon... as the Nissan has much better build quality, and was really a semi-luxury car rather than an aussie built bomb car.
ill look for a pic of one too. they look very tidy with mags, and pretty cool if u want to lower them.

yes maxima's are very nice cars, especially for the price.. been for a ride in one before, it didn't have leather but it had everything else, very smooth
a Chaser would do as well

Saw a nice maxima a while ago. Black, tinted windows, chrome wheels, and dumped. Simple, neat and major pimp machine surprisingly! Seen a few 13B cosmos around the 15-20k and the 20b version from 20k up usually. I've always loved the chasers!

thank the big fella upstairs your still ok ..
lucky for that
No ne here can slag fords or commodores in an accident - they are a heap safer than a lot of cars on the market ( most ones under them are japanese or korean ) nothing saves better than decent metal around you , not all plastic ..
Anyway - to the car issue - VT berlina , or AU fairmont/futura would be the best id you want a similar type of car to what you had , otherwise - camry ..
dont even bother with mistubishi magnas - the only good ones ( the vrx sports ) would be a d\fair hike out of your price range.
Anyway for me - if i was to spend 20K on a car it would be a series 2 AU fairmont ..
big six - and luxury toboot - RWD , and plenty of space for passengers , ABS and air standard ( i think ) Cd player , plushie seats etc et ..
if you can go the next step - Fairmont Ghia comes with the XR6 motor ( dunno how many know that - but they do !! ) same applies with EL fairmonts ..
EL fairmont Ghia would be cheaper - all u need then is to spend the $$'s saves on some good springs , shocks and tyres - and you have a luxury XR6 in discise (sp ?)

it's awesome your still with us bud! shoutout to the bloke upstairs for getting ya outta that one, that's one mega-wrecked commodore!
and um, all this talk about 2j's and xr6s and commodore v8's, if i were dylusions' folks i wouldn't be touching anything powerful after dylusion's just cheated death. the insurance will be up the creek too. get another commodore. those falcons seem to dislike the wet, because at work we get drained of falcon body panels after every storm.

Yeah it WAS my parents car. The insureance is covering it and also what else is a bonus is the fact that the car is/was insured with NRMA... as my dad is a gold member he gets to retain his 60% no claim bonus.... now that is a bonus if you ask me.
I really like the idea of a nissan maxima... either way we go... we will prob end up getting a car from my dads work, Coffs Harbour Toyota... his boss has already said he would look after us.
If there is one thing i have learnt.. it would be upgrade suspension.. even if you dont like good handling and never run cheap SHITE tyres...even if you arent driving as if you had a death warrant... atleast run good tyres.. defenatly worth it.
And again guys thanks for the concern.

um, the maxima idea - now there is a good idea. can be had for well under 20k at definately a luxo barge. another good option would be a cressida, albeit somewhat older, a nice grande could be had for around 10k!

Commodore's aren't a bad car at all. Especially the good old VB's! Not a fan of the new ones, go past them everyday at Westall, I think they have a pretty ugly ass on them.

please, avoid the facodore at all costs. In terms of trim levels, features, performance, handling and safety features they are a world behind the rest of the larger cars suggested here.
Turst me on the Maxima suggestion.. they are AWESOME cars for under $20k....check one out if u get the chance.. you would be VERY surprised. And yes, with nice tints, lowered, mags etc they look PIMP! and don't forget ABS!! i've tried and tested it on our old maxima.... damn saved mine and my Dad's life MORE THAN ONCE!!
The cressida is a nice cheaper alternative, but as a family everyday car not so good... as they are really getting up in the miles. Also the 7m-ge is renouned for head gaskets im told? i dont know for sure....
AU falcons are ugly *awaits flaming* and have crap features that you might've seen on a japanese car over 10 years ago. They are also over priced in comparison to what you get with all the other cars suggested here.

maxima may be good and all - but whats the deal with servicing and parts ? would they be dearer/cheaper than a aussie made family car - even if its not as gadgety ??
for our falcon - weve had it for just on 4 years - bar service intervals its never used oil , never squeaked, rattled fell apart , sagged - or chugged , its 6 is still smooth as the day we bought it - it rides just as firm as it did the day it rolled out from the factory , and its coming up close to 90 thousand km .. Its been to brisbane 3 times up and back - towed my celica home on one from bris to melb, and has been nothing but a pleasure to drive.
i say if your mum and dad want something to just run about in - you cant beat commodore or falcon - they are cheap reliable strong and do the job compitently and for dogs sake - towing with front wheel drive is murder , no matter how good the engine might be ..
does mum and dad want 17 inch chromies dump pipes and subbies etc - or is this just kid saying DAD WE NEED THIS!
