OIL WARNING LITE!! Sat, 05 February 2005 07:51 Go to next message

Hey guys,

The warning lite for the oil has been lighting up over the last couple of days. It is a 96 MR2, 3sge.
I noticed it on the way home on friday, so i topped it up a bit. Was pretty close to perfect anyway, I have only done 5000Km on this oil.
Then this morning the lite came on again after a couple of minutes of driving!??!!

Anyone have any idea!??????!
Any help would be much appreciated

Nick

Either your oil warning light is faulty or your engine has a major problem resulting in low oil pressure. Note that low oil pressure can result in permanent and very expensive engine damage, so don't drive the damn thing until you've had it checked by a prefessional!

get the car towed to a mechanic or get one to come to you ... unless you can afford another engine or a serious rebuild i'd suggest taking the bus until then

If it was me I'd replace the oil light sender unit first. They cost around $10 and is the mostly likely problem with your engine....
The sender is usually somewhere near the oil filter on the block and had 1 wire going to it. It could either be leaking or damaged internally hence giving you a false warning. Same happened to me last week.

Cheers,
Simon

the safer thing would be to test the unknown sensor on a car that you know has good oil pressure.

matey just drive to mechanic get him to do a 1 1/2 second oil pressure check with a pressure gauge. if pressure is ok then change sender or take globe out of instrument cluster Very Happy

it could be ur pressure switch check for a leak from there also check your car temp cause if ur radiators cracked it might be heating uo which would cause the head to expand and you could leak oil from there as well as water going into the head but yea check the pressure switch for a leak from there i could be wrong but worth a check

You have tobe IDIOTIC if you are going to drive this car to a mechanic. If you have low oil pressure you are likely to be doing more damage, notably a big end bearing.

$30 to get the mechanic to check it, or $30 for a cheap sports oil pressure gauge. Just throw it in and see if you've got pressure. I'd assume you would unless maybe there is crud in you sump blocking your oil pickup?

with any luck ur clearances arent already rooted causing low oil pressure in the first place. haha kidding thats worst case scenario, rarely see that in a 4 cyl. but in all seriousness if ur oil light flashes every so often its probably a sender if its on constantly then it could be blocked pickup.

Yeah dudes!
I went to Toyota this morning, they checked the oil level while everyone was there and there are 2 oil lites!

this one is the oil level warning lite!

And they all seemed to think it was ok to drive??
So iam dumping the oil tomorrow and flushing any contaminants and going from there!
Then i will be able to tell if it is clogged or it its electrical, or getting closer to finding out ne way!
