5MGE questions

Just wondering what versions there are of the 5M, for the Cressida in particular. Did the MX73 ever come out with a single cam version of the 2.8litre 5M?
And is it possible to run the 5MGE using a 5ME ECU?
Cheers in advance

Early MX73's did come with 5M-E's (the single cam 2.8l engine), and the late ones (1986->) came with 5M-GE's as far as I'm aware (due to unleaded fuel?).
Yes it is possible to run a 5mge on a 5me ecu, but it is better to use the 5mge ecu if possible...do a search as this topics has come up HEAPS of times in the past
Cheers

I have an MX62 and put in a 5M-GE along with the ECU.
And if you're wondering if its worth the effort - its a definite yes. However, its not the best bang for your buck though. Still a fair bit of effort for the extra horsepower.

Im actually putting a 1JZ in my Cressida, but Im just asking these questions out of curiosity. I'm trying to sell my 5MGE engine and g/box, and I had a guy that was interested in it (he has a 1986 MX73) , he drove over to get it, but when he had a look, he didnt want it anymore because he said the 5MGE in his was a single cam :-S How could it be that my 85 Cressida has the twin cam, but his was a 86 with only the single. And I was pretty sure that I had seen people talk about the 5MGE's being very similar to the 5ME (like ECU's work both ways and bolts right in pretty much) so I tired to explain to him that it would work, but he was full on thinking that it wouldnt fit :-S

this guy is a fool.
the g in 5mge defines the engine as a twin cam. drop the g and you have the single cam...5me!
they are similar in that they will bolt in the same places, and do share some things like starters, alternators etc. the 5mge can also be run using a 5me loom/ecu.

Phew, thats what I wanted to hear Thats what I thought, but I couldnt work out why he wouldnt want the better engine and go for my twin cam instead of finding another single because he thinks its a "better fit" or something? Its got me....
