HELP!!! I'm getting engine noise through my speakers?

I just installed an amp in a mates car,
ran the red wire from the +ve terminal on the battery to the fuse which I placed in the engine bay using one of the screws for the wiper motor, then ran the wire through the firewall with some other wires under the carpet and then to the power bit of the amp, I am grounding the amp using one of the bolts holding down the passenger seat.
the remote wire is just a really thin wire.
and then the RCA is running from the back of the headunit, to the input on the amp.
When the car is off it all works fine, no feedback. But as soon as the engine is turned on the speakers emit a weird noise that seems to go with the sound of the engine, only it is high pitch? yet sound still comes out?
the 4" speakers in the front that are hooked up to the headunit dont have this problem they work normally all the time.
Can someone please tell me what is causing this problem, and more importantly how I can fix it?
the head unit is a pioneer DEH-P2650
and the amp is a midas 1200w amp.
power wire and ground wire is 8gauge, speaker wire is just the normal really thing stuff, and the remote wire is just a piece of that speaker wire.
Thanks very much for any help!

Dude,
Make sure that the power and RCA's run down seperate sides of the car!
And are as far away from eachother as possible!
Makesure no speaker wire runs along side the Power cable.
And for a bit more in the install use a larger guage wire for the ground.

hi mate,
i used to install stereos for 2 years, so i think i can help you.
levos1 is half right, the first thing is to keep the RCA cables away from other cables as much as possible, incl factory stuff. spkr and power cables can stay together its ok. remove your earth cable bolt and sand the paint back to the metal to ensure good contact. also check the earth lead on the battery if it is good enough.
pioneer is a reputable brand but ive never heard of your amp, it sound like a cheaper brand and it may be the cause of your problem. does one of your friends have another amp to try in the car.
hope this helps mate.

Hey there,
Im the guy who's stereo this is, Thanks for your reply.
As soon as i get some time I will go out and Rewire it all up.. See how i go..
As for the Amp, yeah its a cheap brand, but i didnt pay anything for it, so when i get some money, ill get a decent one.
Ill let everyone know how Whitchy and I go with the speakers.
We also sanded the paint off to make a good earth, and it worked fine, so i dont think that would be a problem, but ill check anyway..
Thanks again for the post.. Very helpfull

Alright, well we got some time today, so Whitchy and I moved the RCA's away completely from the Power wire, and its still picking up back frequencies...
Ive been told it may be my earth, so that will be next to change, but i didnt think that a bad earth would create the frequency..
I think ill go buy a Noise filter...

MS112 wrote on Thu, 10 February 2005 13:47 | I've been told that one cause of your radio emitting a whine while the engine is running is that the alternator brushes/slip rings have either had it or are slightly damaged so that each time the damaged part of a slip ring passes over a brush a spark is produced. This voltage spike can be heard through the speakers. I think that's problem I have with my car (I hope) so I'm going to change the alternator sometime soon.
Does the whine become louder when you switch on the headlights (while the car is running)?
Hopefully that helps. Cheers
(edit:: Just changed the alternator, and the problem dissappeared.)

Make sure that the earth of power wire does not cross over the rca in any place, if you havn't already run the power down the same side of the car as the battery and the rca's down the centre or the oposite side to the power. Check your fuses. Make sure that the power wire is as far away from you distributer as possible this is my most common problem with backyard installs.
If nothing else works get a GOOD engine noise suppressor not something from supercheap. If this still doesn't work a capaciter will reduce some of the noise but you will probly have a problem with the alternator.
