[AE86] Clutch problem Mon, 07 February 2005 21:33 Go to next message
hey all, i have a problem with my clutch.

If im revving the car hard eg in the hills, say im in second gear on and off the throttle, keeping it in 2nd for a while(30 secs or more in one gear). When i go to clutch in to change gear, i have little or sometimes no clutch pedal feel.

If i put it into neutral and pump the clutch i can build up more pressure, but i will lose pedal feel soon again.

any ideas?

edit: the clutch is a exedy heavy duty, and it doesnt slip at all, not even when i lose pedal feel.

most likely a leaky cylinder (check both slave and master for leaks). I would monitor the fluid level closely, you might get stuck without a clutch if wear starts to accelerate.

Its not hard or expensive to change the cylinders...

Either that or your clutch fluid is overheating.

From memory you have an Aus gearbox/bellhousing on a 4age. Headers run really close to the clutch.

i am guessing your extractors are near your clutch slope, and clutch lines, at one time my clutch lines melted being rubber due to the excessive heat, possibly change those lines over and maybe something more heat resistant will solve your problem.

Some simple heat/thermo wrap around that part of the exhaust or tape up your fluid line that goes over/under the exhaust.

I had a similar problem once, but it sounds liek a fluid problem.

Cheers

Thanks guys for teh help

I dont have any leaks, my clutch fluid has always been at max ever since ive owned the car. I think it might just be heating up, ill try wrapping my exhaust see if it helps.

I also didnt have my thermofan hooked up for a couple weeks, and this is when i was having the clutch problem, although i hooked it up yesterday, maybe that will help things?

thanks guys

Yup.. came across the same problem in a aw11 mr2 turbo.. turbo was too close to the slave.. and after a couple of laps at a track.. no clutch...
A simple heat sheild fixed that problem.

If you've got a factory RWD manifold+pipe, then the clutch cylinder will be fine, but if you have aftermarket monkey pipes, well I've got no idea how close it is... Thing is, so many of these older cars have got dead clutch masters, and they're like $30 to replace for a corolla, so about the only problem you'll have is the contortions of the neck getting the bolts undone Very Happy

I have trd copy extractors, ill have to look to see how close they are.

Is there any way to tell by looking, the condition of the master/slave cylinders?
